OUR FOCUS
In light of the 2018 midterm elections, our
focus this year was on flipping the United
States Congress, as well as on team-
building and collaboration with others.

INAUGURATION WEEK

Tri-Caucus
Happy Hour
For the first time,DPVA and its caucuses --
the Democratic Asian Americans of Virginia
(DAAV), the Democratic Black Caucus
(DBCV) and the Democratic Latino
Organization of Virginia (DLOV) -- hosted
a Happy Hour during Inauguration week
in Richmond.
The event was attended by elected officials
including the then Governor of Virginia,
Terry McAuliffe.
FOURTH ANNUAL

APAHM 2018
This year, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
overlapped with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and
DAAV combined our annual gala with our first ever iftar
dinner. The gala was attended by several notable guests,
including Governor Ralph Northam, current VA Sec. of
Education Atif Qarni, former VA Sec. of Education Anne
Holton, Rep. Gerry Connolly, and candidates for the VA-10
Democratic congressional primary.
The Joe Montano Community Engagement Awards honored two leaders of the
Virginia Asian American community: Sue Langley and Tae Chang Woo.
SUE LANGLEY

Sue Langley is a member of the State Central


Committee from the 11th Congressional
District, and most recently served as the Fairfax
County Democratic Committee Chair for two
terms, serving from 2014 to 2017. Ms. Langley
has fought for Democratic candidates at all
levels of government-- public education,
universal healthcare, immigration reform, better
gun laws, and women rights. She served as
FCDC Precinct Operations Vice Chair from
2006 to 2011, and as Obama for America’s
NTL in 2012, leading a team of volunteers
registered voters, organizing phone banks,
canvasses, and GOTV from her home to help
re-elect President Obama.

TAE CHANGE WOO

Tae Chang Woo is the current president of the


Korean American Society of Virginia, and he
has served as president of the Washington
Korean Senior Association since 2008 to the
present. Mr. Woo has been a role model and
activist in the Korean American community for
over 25 years. Mr. Woo runs outreach efforts to
mobilize Korean American senior citizens to
vote every cycle, as well as organizing
volunteers and campaign events for state-wide
Democratic candidates.

FELLOW

Arjit Roshan was awarded the Joe


Montano Fellowship. He worked on
Asian American and Pacific Islanders
(AAPI) outreach on the Jennifer
Wexton campaign.
THIRD ANNUAL

DIWALI FESTIVAL OF
LIGHTS
This is the second year we hosted this event in
collaboration with the VA 11th District Democratic
Committee, DAAV hosted our 3rd annual Diwali event,
celebrating the Hindu festival of lights with music, food,
and words from important community leaders. The event’s
notable guests included Senator Tim Kaine and Rep. Gerry
Connolly, among many other VA leaders.
