Laboratory Exercise No. 1

Distance Measurement by Pacing on Even Ground

Name: Date Performed: Score: ________

Course and Year: Date Submitted:

I. INTRODUCTION

II. LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the laboratory class, the students should be able to:
 Define Pacing;
 Determine or estimate the length of a paced or walked line
 Solve problems related to pacing.

III. MATERIALS AND TOOLS NEEDED

 Crayon or Chalk
 Measuring tape
 Pen and Lecture Notebook

IV. PROCEDURE

 Level Ground
1. A straight and level course of 75.5 meters of length was assigned by the instructor and
was designated the end points as point A and B.
2. Walk along the course at natural pace over point A and count the number of paces to
reach point B. The number of paces was recorded in engineer’s field notebook.
3. Make ten (10) trials. For succeeding trials, walk from B to A, then A to B, until 5 trials
are completed. The data gathered has been recorded and presented as shown in the
table below.

NUMBER OF MEAN NO. OF LENGTH OF LINE

TRIAL LINE
PACES PACES AB
1 AB 108
2 BA 103.25
3 AB 98
4 BA 101.25
5 AB 96.5
? 75.5 m.
6 BA 97
7 AB 96.25
8 BA 98.25
9 AB 97
10 BA 96.75

4. Computing of Pace factor by using the formula below:

𝑃𝐷
𝑷𝑭 = 𝑤ℎ𝑒𝑟𝑒; 𝑃𝐷 𝑖𝑠 𝑃𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝐷𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑃𝐹 𝑖𝑠 𝑃𝑎𝑐𝑒 𝐹𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑜𝑟
𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛 𝑛𝑜. 𝑜𝑓 𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑠

5. Determining if there’s an error in the resulted Pace Factor, the instructor set-up another
straight and level course of unknown length and make 6 trials walking from A to B and
vice versa, and count and record the number of pace.

6. Word Problems
i. A pacer walked six times over a straight and level course XY; he recorded his
steps as 121, 123, 124, 121, 122, and 123. Determine the length of line XY if
his pace factor is 0.79 m/pace.

ii. A surveyor recorded 75,77,76,75, and 76 strides over a straight and level
course of unknown length. Determine the distance he paced (in meters) if his
pace factor is 0.79 m/pace.
