“Pete the Cat and Hi s Four Groovy Buttons”

Mini Literac y and Math Unit

This is a mini unit I created for my Kindergarten classroom as an
emergency substitute plan. I kept t he act ivities relatively simple so that
they can be used during most of the school year.
Read A loud
The book “Pet e the Cat and His Four Groo vy
Buttons” by Eric Litwin and art by J ames Dean would
be used as a read aloud.
Comprehension– Making Connec tions
The students can tell about a time t hey lost
something.
Comprehension Follow-up – Inferring
This is an ideal book to use for introducing numbers and subtraction.
Shared and Guided Reading
I created a simple and patt erned and interactive emergent reader of
the story that will be used for both shared and guided reading. This
allows the students to read t his version successfully aft er it has been
modeled during our shared reading time. It will be projected on my
Smart Board so all the students can see t he print. If you do not have
an int eractive white board, the pictures can be printed, cut and placed
in a pocket chart along side the printed text.
We will also complete the interactive component to gether as we read
the text.
Interac tive Component
I love using printable interactive reading
boo ks for both my shared and guided
reading experiences. This initiates greater
comprehension, meaning and sense of
ownership for my students. They tho roughly
enjoy completing these little readers and
taking them home to read to t heir parents. In this reader the students
will draw the correct amount of buttons as indicated in the text and
add t heir own facial features to complete each page.

Guide d Reading
I will be using the interactive black and white version of the emergent
reader during guided reading time. I will be monitoring if my students
are able to track words, use pict ure clues, initial letter sounds and sight
words to determine what the wo rds are and completing the interactive
component.
Possible Focus Skills
Ø Word tracking and left to right pro gression
Ø Initial letter sounds found within the reader
Ø Sight wo rds “on, my”
