1. OBSERVATION DRAWING DURATION: Four Lessons


Students will-
- Discuss the animals and plants living under the sea
- View plastic animals of frogs, crabs, lobster and turtles
- Use black oil pastel on art paper to draw the animal
- Concentrate on detail such as body texture, no. Of appendages etc.
- Select the correct colours to render the animal as lifelike as possible
- Blend colours using white or a lighter colour
- Cut out their drawing on the outside of the line
- Look at and discuss the patterns made by water
- Use white and light blue oil pastel to draw these patterns on a separate
piece of artpaper
- Wash the paper with blue edicol dye
- Collage their sea animal onto the page
- Discuss the idea of ‘mixed media’
- Talk about intensity of colour

2. CONTINUING THE THEME DURATION : Two Lessons


Students will-
- Critically look at shells and note their shapes, colours and identifying
features
- Use black oil pastel to draw the shell
- Choose the oil pastels in the shells colours and render the colour and
patterns on the shell
- Cut out the shell on the outside of the line
- Collage the shell onto their work
- Talk about their own and their classmates work particularly looking at
placement of the collage and realism of the sea life

3. SEA LIFE IN 3D DURATION: Three lessons
Students will-
- Look again at the sea life and talk about their characteristics in a
sculptural way eg, long thin legs, fat
- Determine the patterns on the bodies
- Use paperclay to create the large shape then add the appendices
- Continue to make the sea animal adding detail and texture
- Allow the animal to dry then rework on top of the dried form giving
extra texture
- Use watercolours in the correct tones identifying the changing hues
and often different belly colours
- Discuss the difficulties in making a sculpture rather than drawing it
- Exhibit the work with real shells etc
