FORMS Drawing, Painting, Printmaking
RESOURCES RESOURCES: visuals and colour photocopies of the Mona
Lisa, portraits by a variety of artists, photocopies of student
school photos
MATERIALS: paper, graphite pencil, smudge stick, eraser,
hand mirrors, watercolours, black sharpie texta, tracing paper,
oil pastels, artline pens, block printing ink, roller, artpaper,
coloured pencils, watercolours
APPRECIATION - talks and writes about the meaning of artworks and
recognises how artworks can be valued in different
ways by themselves and an audience
- identifies some of the reasons why artworks are made

ASSESSMENT Students were able to:
- use media that requires a high level of skill in its
manipulation
- critically look at the face and the human body and
show qualities of subject matter
- discuss the artwork with an audience and recount the
process giving a subjective opinion of their own work

SUBJECT MATTER: PORTRAITS

1. IDENTIFYING THE FORMS DURATION: Three Lessons


Students will-
- Critically view other students faces to identify shapes ie. Almond eyes,
M shaped lips, and feel their own bone structure on their face
- be given a photocopy of a series of eyes and lips that show the different
forms and characteristics
- redraw the eyes over the lines then find a student that has similar shaped
eyes
- complete details of the eyes while viewing that student
- include eyebrows and crease lines in the drawing
- use the empty box with space prompters to draw their own eyes using a
hand mirror
- then redraw the series of lips and repeat the process finding a student
that has those lip types
- again use the empty box and a mirror to draw their own lips
- discuss likenesses and the inherent difficulties in achieving it

2. SELF PORTRAIT DURATION: Three Lessons


Students will-
- View a range of portraits including the Mona Lisa, works by Picasso,
Van Gogh ,Leger, Escher and a selection of traditional byzantine, Nth
American Indian and religious works
- Discuss the characteristics of the visuals noting face shape, realism,
colour, placement of features, eye shape and size, lip M, underlying
bone structure and shading
- Use a hand mirror to view their own face verbalising the shape of their
features in contrast to others in the class
- Use large artpaper in portrait format and graphite pencil to draw their
own face using the mirror and guided cues from the teacher
- Include details of eyes, brows, nose, lips, nostrum, ears, neck hair and
uniform
- Draw on the ‘characteristics’ lesson to fine tune eyes and lips
- Watch a demonstration of blending and shading with a smudge stick
and recognise how to attain particular tones
- Remember from past conversations that hair is made up of hairs and is
never just one line
- Shade the recessed areas of the face the darkest
- Accentuate the eyes and the shading around the eyes
- Critically view their own and classmates work and give positive
comments

3. A DETAIL IN MANGA DURATION: Four Lessons


Students will-
- Use a cut out 5’’ x 7’’ frame to find the most interesting section of their
work
- Reference Manga comic books to appropriate the style, discuss the
elements of this style
- Draw the framed section of their portrait in Manga style
- Copy this to a canvas board using carbon paper
- Use heavy black texts to outline the work
- Colour the work sparingly in flat tones
- Critically look at the 2 portrait artworks and self evaluate them
- Consider the contemporary style of Manga as part of their own
generation
