Ultimate Frisbee 1 of 1 Passing and Catching 50 minutes Middle School 15 students
Cues 9:59-‐10:49 7th grade
Main Objective(s):
I can: throw a frisbee to a partner with accuracy and catch a frisbee on the move while incorporating the throwing and
catching cues
Specific Objectives:
P: I can demonstrate the backhand throwing technique used in frisbee using the cues of “curl, extend, snap, and point”
during the majority of each activity and can properly catch the frisbee using two hands every time
C: I can demonstrate my understanding of the cues for throwing and catching a frisbee by giving my partner feedback
when needed
A: I can demonstrate sportsmanship when defense is incorporated by partaking in the “Spirit of the Game” value and
giving constructive feedback to my peers
Assessment(s): (attach actual assessment)
Students will be observed visually and corrected as necessary; this will allow the teacher to see what the students need
to improve on (formative assessment attached after references)

Time: Plan (include formations/grouping):
4 mins. Students go to locker room and change
1 min. Take attendance (in class lines)
5 mins. Instant Activity: “Toss 5”à Students will be in pairs for this activity. Students will grab a frisbee (one for each
pair). Students should not use the frisbee yet.
On the teacher’s go, the students will pass the frisbee back and forth 5 times with their partner. Once five
passes/catches have been made, the partner with the frisbee will go find a different person without a frisbee.
The object of the game is to work with as many people as possible in 3 minutes. Students should spread out
throughout the gym and their partner should be within 5 feet of them.
This activity will help the teacher judge the student’s prior learning.
E: Increase the amount of passes before the students switch
R: Students stay with the same partner the whole activity
SM: Smaller playing area or separate playing area
Transition to Introduction/Objective(s): “Today we will learn/review the correct way to throw and catch a
frisbee.”
3 mins. New Learning: (question to prompt higher-‐ordered thinking regarding objective)
Students come to the center of the gym and take a seat facing the teacher
“Has anyone ever played ultimate frisbee before?” (yes/no); “Was this activity hard or easy for those of you
who have or have not played before?” (easy—if played/hard—if never played)
Go over cues of catching and throwing (backhand) the frisbee (above) with demonstrations and the “Spirit of
the game”
5 mins. Activity 1: “Toss-‐up”à Students will again be in pairs for this activity. We will practice our throwing and
catching skills using the cues. “Who can remind everyone the cues for catching?” (position, two hands, palms
face each other, clap) “Who can remind everyone the cues for throwing?” (curl, extend, snap, point)
On the teacher’s go, the students will line up across from their partner with enough space between groups so
that they don’t interfere with others. The students will be practicing the backhand throwing technique.
“Remember to call your partner’s name when throwing them the frisbee to make sure they are looking at you
when you throw.” As you feel more comfortable with catching and throwing, increase the distance. Make sure
you are correcting your partner’s form if necessary.
E: Students can increase the distance between their partner as necessary and practice other techniques other
than backhand if they know them
R: Students can decrease the distance between their partner to increase the chance of success
SM: Shorter distance between partner pairs and reminders of cues for catching and throwing
2 mins. Transition: “Throwing and catching the frisbee are critical skills needed to be able to participate in the game of
Students come to the center of the gym and take a seat facing the teacher
Ultimate Frisbee. An additional skill that will be necessary when playing the game of Ultimate Frisbee is the
ability to throw a leading pass. Does anyone know what a leading pass is?” (a leading pass is a pass thrown in
front of the player so they can catch on the run)
8 mins. Activity 2: “Throw and Go”à Students will remain in pairs for this activity. The object of this activity is to
throw a leading pass to your partner so they catch the frisbee while on the run.
On the teacher’s go, the thrower will tell their partner when to start running and call their partner’s name
when they are going to throw. The throw for this activity will also utilize the backhand throw. This will take
some trial and error. Partner’s should have a chance at both roles.
E: Increase the distance between partners for a longer throw or add defense and incorporate other throws
R: Decrease the distance between partners for more accuracy; begin at walking speed
SM: Decrease distance and allow for more space
1 min. Transition: “Do we think that we need more time working on this or can we add defense to make this a little
more realistic?” (if groups feel ready, add defense; if groups aren’t ready, continue the drill)
15 Activity 3: “Throw and Go with Defense”à Students will form groups of 3. The object of this activity is to
mins. throw a leading pass to your partner while they are being marked up by a defender.
On the teacher’s go, the thrower will tell their partner when to start running and call their partner’s name
when they are going to throw. The thrower will utilize the backhand technique. The defense will be on the
person running to catch the ball. This will take some trial and error. Each member should have a chance at
each role.
E: Add a fourth group member and have a defender on the thrower and catcher or utilize a different throwing
technique
R: The defender could play “dummy defense” and just stand in the way
SM: Continue working on leading passes without defenders
5 mins. Back-‐up Activity: “Rules of Ultimate Frisbee”à Rules are above; if there is extra time, we will go over the rules
of playing Ultimate Frisbee.
Students are seated in front of the teacher.
E: Students who already know the rules can help demonstrate/explain
R: Take a longer amount of time to go over rules
SM: Demonstrate to students and show examples
1 min. Closure/Review: Students come to the center of the gym and take a seat facing the teacher
“Now that you all have learned some of the critical skills necessary for Ultimate Frisbee, next class you will
learn the rules of Ultimate Frisbee and play in small modified games.”
“Who can remind everyone of the cues for catching?” (position, two hands, palms face each other, clap)
“Who can remind everyone of the cues for throwing?” (curl, extend, snap, point)
4 mins. Students go to locker room and change
1 min. Student dismissal when bell ringsà from locker room or class lines
