REGION
TEMPERATURE AND ATMOSPHERE
REGION
5 different layers of
Earth’s Atmosphere
TROPOSPHERE
Nearest to Earth
It goes from 0km to 16 km
Air cools at an average rate of
6.5 C/km (3.5 F/1000 ft)
All weather happens in
troposphere
The temperature drops the
altitude increases
Harmful ozone is found in this
layer.
STRATOSPHRE
It goes from 16km to 50 km
Temperature goes up with
altitude
The ozone layer which absorbs
and scatters the solar ultraviolet
radiation in this layer
Ideal to fly for large jet plane
MESOSPHERE
The coldest layer of the
atmosphere
Meteors burn up in this layer
Radio waves are reflected
back to earth in the
mesosphere
The temperature decreases to
about -90 C
The highest point of
mesosphere is called
mesopause
THERMOSPHERE
Hottest layer of the atmosphere
Curtains of light called auroras
occur in this layer
The ionosphere is found in the
thermosphere.
The temperature increases to
about 0 C at 110 km to about
1000 C at 150 km and a peak of
about 1780 C at 700 km
EXOSPHERE
The outer most layer of the
atmosphere
Temperature in exosphere goes
up with altitude
Satellites orbit earth in
exosphere
Summary
Troposphere is hotter near the Earth’s surface
because heat from the Earth warms the air and as
the altitude increases, the air temperature
decreases.
Stratosphere has a layer of ozone this layer absorbs
most of ultraviolet radiation from the sun this will
result the stratosphere being warmer and as the
altitude increases, the air temperature increases.
Mesosphere has a decrease in temperature with
altitude because of the decreases in the density of
air molecules and as the altitude increases the air
temperature decreases
Thermosphere is warmed by absorption of solar X-
rays by nitrogen and oxygen molecules and as the
altitude increases, the air temperature increases.
Exosphere is extremely cold simply due to the fact
that it’s mostly made up of a vacuum.
