MIXING AND AGITATION.

Aim:

To determine the mixing index of fluid for specific type of agitator and vessel

geometry.

Theory:

Performance of industrial mixers are judged by time required, properties of fluid

and degree of uniformity of a mixed product is measured by analysis of number of

samples. In qualitative measurement of mixing of one of following equation is used

to calculate average required quantity and average concentration of sample:

X =  xi
n
Where,

n = no of samples taken.

There is considerable difference in the value of ‘x’ where n is larger than and

smaller than standard deviation above the values X can be calculated by equation:

 =  (xi – X) 
n-1

The standard deviation is measure of quantity of mixing at zero mixing, if can be

written as

 = μ ( 1 – μ)

Hence mixing index can be defined as,

I =  =  (xi – X)
(n-1) μ (1 – μ)

Before mixing begins i.e. Where t = 0, I = 0 and t > 1, i > 1 power consuption for

laminar flow region as,

p = KL n D a .

For turbulent region p = Kr n Da .

Where

P= power in watts.

n = RPM

= Density of fluid

 = Viscosity of fluid.

KL = 41 and Kr = 0.32.

PROCEDURE:

For mixing index –

1. Vessel is filled with water of measured quantity.

2. 10 GM of NaOH is weighed and added in vessel.

3. Start agitator

4. After fixed time intervals withdraw samples from various points.

5. Titrate samples against standard HCl solution by using phenolphtalin as an

indicator.

6. Calculate mole fraction of salt with help of burette reading.

7. Repeat experiment for various agitator speeds.

RESULT:

Mixing index of given sample goes on diminishing with time and speed of agitator.

The zero value of mixing index shows that the mixing of the material in the solution

is complete and uniform.
