How to connect the Allen-Bradley E3 Solid-State Overload

Relay to Profibus using the Anybus-X Gateway

Application summary
This document explains the procedure of connecting the Allen-Bradley E3 Solid-State
Overload Relay to Profibus using the Anybus-X DeviceNet Master to Profibus Slave
Gateway. This application note will explain how to configure the gateway and setup the
data exchange between the E3 Overload Relay on DeviceNet and a Profibus Master. The
Profibus master will be able to scan the E3 inputs and write to its’ outputs.
The E3 Overload Relay has 8 input bytes at instance 100 and 1 output byte at instance
105.
Application Equipment and Materials
Materials used in the development of this application note are as follows:
• Hardware used in development of application note: Anybus-X DeviceNet Master to
Profibus Slave Gateway (AB7663), Allen-Bradley E3 Plus Solid-State Overload
Relay, Anybus NetTool RS232-DeviceNet adapter (018020), Profibus Master
Simulator (017504).
• Software used in development of application note: Anybus-NetTool-DN-D
DeviceNet Scanner Configuration Tool (018020), HMS Profibus DP Master
Simulator (017504), and Windows HyperTerminal.
• Documentation consulted: Anybus-X Profibus Slave Addendum, Anybus-X
DeviceNet Scanner/Master Addendum, Anybus NetTool for DeviceNet User’s
Guide, Allen-Bradley Bulletins 193 and 592.
• Appropriate Programming Cables: DeviceNet cable with terminating resisters,
cable kit included with Anybus-X for configuration, cable kit included with Profibus
DP Master Simulator.
Configuration software is required in order to configure the Anybus-X DeviceNet Master.
Anybus NetTool-DN-D is the tool used in this example. It allows the user to configure,
manage and troubleshoot multiple DeviceNet networks. NetTool-DN-D consists of a
Windows network configuration software application along with an RS232-DeviceNet
adapter that allows a PC to connect to the DeviceNet network.
To create a Profibus network, an HMS Profibus Master simulator is used. The HMS
Profibus Master simulator does not require GSD files for HMS devices. On a normal
Profibus network, the GSD file for the gateway is required to be installed before the
Profibus scanner recognizes the Anybus-X.
Anybus NetTool requires an Electronic Data Sheet (EDS) for all DeviceNet nodes on the
network. Parameter Data Objects are not supported. Slaves that require this functionality
will not work. The EDS file for the Allen-Bradley E3 module was downloaded off Allen-
Bradley’s website (http://www.ab.com).
Setting up the hardware
Please refer to the documentation of each device when setting up the devices in the
network. In this example, the Anybus-X DeviceNet Master is configured with a baud rate
of 500k and a node address of 1. The E3 Plus module DeviceNet interface is configured
with a node address of 2. The DeviceNet network also has the AnyBus NetTool adapter
connected. Termination resisters are installed on both ends of the DeviceNet network.

Connect the cable included with the NetTool adapter to the RS-232 COM port on your PC.
The NetTool software is then ready to be run.
Set the Profibus node address on the Anybus-X module. In this example, we have set the
node address to 3. Connect the cable that comes with HMS Profibus Master Simulator
RS232 to Profibus adapter to the Anybus-X Profibus 9 pin D-Sub connector. The other
end of the cable will connect to the COM port on the PC where the Master Simulator
software is installed.
Setting up Anybus-X module
Connect a null modem cable from the configuration port on the Anybus-X to the COM port
on the PC. Open a Windows HyperTerminal session, with the settings of 57600 baud, 8
data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit and no hardware flow control. Apply power (24 VDC) to the
Anybus-X gateway. After the boot-up sequence of the gateway, a menu should appear.
Select the “Change Configuration” option. Hit “Y” to have the gateway go offline. The first
menu item will be the number of input bytes for the Profibus slave configuration. Since the
E3 Overload Relay has 8 input bytes, enter 8. Next, enter the Profibus-DP output bytes.
For the E3 there is 1 output byte, enter 1. These sizes must match the DeviceNet slave
sizes of the E3 Overload Relay; otherwise there will be a size mismatch error. Next, set
the Offline option and the Control/Status byte (enabled or disabled). The screen should
look similar to Figure 1 below.

Figure 1

Power cycle the gateway so these settings will take effect. The Anybus-X gateway is now
configured. The HyperTerminal configuration cable can be disconnected.

Setting up NetTool DeviceNet -D-DN
Connect the cable from the NetTool adapter to the COM port on the PC. If the same COM
port was used for HyperTerminal, be sure you disconnect from the HyperTerminal session.
Open the NetTool software and create a new configuration. Give the configuration a name
and select “OK” to continue. You now need to select a driver. Go to Tools and select
Configure driver. A pop-up screen should appear asking for driver selection. Highlight the
following and select OK to continue.

Figure 2

If the driver does not appear, then there was a problem with the installation of the driver
software. Reinstall the software driver.
After the driver has been selected, another pop-up will appear to configure the DeviceNet
properties.

Figure 3

Make sure all the E3 DeviceNet slaves are configured for the same baud rate and assign a
unique Mac ID (node address) for the NetTool. In this example we will assign a DeviceNet
Mac ID of 63. Click “Go Online” to go online on the DeviceNet network with the NetTool.
Once a connection has been established, the screen should look similar to the Figure 4.
Make sure that the EDS file for the DeviceNet slave nodes are installed in NetTool. This
can be performed by clicking on the EDS button on the NetTool toolbar.

NetTool should now be online with the Anybus DeviceNet master. The Anybus DeviceNet
Master scanlist must be configured. To download a new scanlist to the DeviceNet Master,
the Master must first be put in an “idle” state. Otherwise the download will not take effect.
Double click on the node 1, which is the Anybus-X DeviceNet Master. Under the
Parameter tab, click on the master state. Select Idle and then click the Download button.
You must click download, otherwise the settings will not take effect. This is shown in
Figure 5.

The Anybus-X DeviceNet Master is now in an idle state. Select the “Scanner” tab. Select
the E3 Plus node.

Figure 6

A screen similar to Figure 6 will appear. Check the box for “Polled”. The Rx input bytes
should be 8 and the Tx output bytes should be 1. After this is completed, select “OK” to
add the slave node into the scanlist. The E3 Plus node will appear in the Added column.
Next, select the Input tab. Select the slave node and click “AutoMap”. This will map the
inputs into the scanlist. This is shown in Figure 7. Do the same for the Output tab.

Figure 7

After this is completed, select the “Parameter” tab. Select “Download” in order to
download the latest scanlist configuration into the Anybus-X DeviceNet Master. The new
scanlist that includes the E3 Plus node should now be resident in the Anybus-X. Now,
change the Master State of the Anybus-X DeviceNet Master to “Run”. Then click on
“Download” button again to set the DeviceNet Master back to run mode. The Anybus-X
DeviceNet Master will now poll the E3 Plus slave. If the DeviceNet Master is left in idle
state, the master will not poll the E3 Plus slave. The DeviceNet NetTool can be taken off
the DeviceNet network. Disconnect the NetTool cable from the COM port and close the
NetTool application.
Setting up HMS Profibus Master Simulator
Connect the Profibus cable provided with the HMS Profibus Master Simulator between the
Anybus-X Profibus port and the PC running the Profibus Master Simulator port. Open the
Profibus Master Simulator software. Make sure the correct COM port is selected and go to
the Address tab and select “Start Search”. The Profibus Master Simulator should find the
Anybus-X Profibus slave and display a screen similar to Figure 8.

Figure 8

The Anybus-X Profibus slave node will be displayed as “HMS ANYBUS-S”. Next, go to
the Address tab and select “Stop Search”. Now double click on the HMS Anybus-S node.
A message is displayed noting the outputs will be changed. Select the OK button. A
window similar to Figure 9 will appear.

The Anybus-X DeviceNet Master was configured to poll 8 bytes of input data and 1 byte of
output data. This data should now be available on the Profibus network. The 8 input
bytes refer to the E3 Plus inputs, while the single output byte can be used to set the E3
Plus outputs. For example, setting the output byte to a value to 1 will turn on the first
output on the E3 Plus relay. Setting to a value of 2 will turn on the second output on the
relay. It is now possible to read and write data to the E3 Solid-State Overload relay from
the Profibus scanner.
