ADJECTIVE CLAUSES

(The Use of WHO, WHOM, WHICH, WHOSE)

Introduction:
Adjective Clauses is used to give detail information about noun (human or things). In
Indonesian, we can simply translate all kinds of adjective clauses as “YANG”. We can use
any kind of Adjective Clause in every tenses.

A. WHO
Sentence:
The man who lives next to my house is friendly.

Lelaki yang tinggal di sebelah rumahku itu sangat ramah.

Original clauses:
The man is friendly : Lelaki itu sangat ramah (main sentence)

The man/He lives next to my house: Lelaki itu tinggal di sebelah rumahku (detail
information)

You just simply insert the second clause between the main sentence by using ONLY ONE
SUBJECT WHICH IS The man. So, after WHO you have to use verb or to be.

WHO IS ONLY USED FOR HUMAN.

B. WHOM
Sentence:
The man whom I met yesterday was friendly.
S O S
Lelaki yang saya temui kemarin itu sangat ramah.

Explanation:
If WHO only uses ONE SUBJECT, then WHOM uses two subject because The man in the
first clause as SUBJECT (S1) and in the second clause as OBJECT. So, after WHOM you
use the second SUBJECT (S2).
Original clauses:
The man was friendly : Lelaki itu sangat ramah
(S1)
I met him yesterday. : Saya bertemu dengan lelaki itu kemarin
(S2) O

WHOM IS ONLY USED FOR HUMAN.


C. WHICH
Sentence:
The river which flows through town is polluted.

Sungai yang mengalir melaui kota itu telah tercemar.

The chocolate which I bought yesterday was delicious.

Explanation:
The theory is the same with WHO, but WHICH is used for things or animals.

Original Clauses:
The river is polluted : Sungai itu telah tercemar

The river/It flows through town : Sungai itu mengalir melalui kota
S

WHICH IS USED FOR NON HUMAN THINGS (THINGS OR ANIMALS).

D. WHOSE
Sentence:
The man whose car was stolen called police.

Lelaki yang mobilnya dicuri itu menelepon polisi.

Explanation:
WHOSE is used to explain POSESSION (KEPEMILIKAN).

Original Clauses:
The man called police : Lelaki itu menelepon polisi

His car was stolen : Mobil lelaki itu telah dicuri

You just need to change His with Whose.

E. FURTHER INFORMATION
1. You can change all of Adjective clauses above with THAT except for
WHOSE.
- The man that lives next to my house is friendly
- The man that I met yesterday was friendly
- The river that flows through the town is polluted

2. REMEMBER, adjective clauses can be used in any kind of TENSES

3. Algebra problems contain letters. They stand for unknown numbers.
4. The book was good. I read it.
5. The people were very nice. We visited them yesterday.
6. The man gave me good advice. I spoke to him.
7. I read about a man. He keeps chickens in his apartment.
8. The man called the police. His wallet was stolen.
9. The people were nice. We visited their house.
10. I met the woman. Her husband is the president of the corporation.
Directions: All of these sentences contain errors in ADJECTIVE CLAUSE structures.

7. I don’t like to spend time with people which loses their temper easily.
8. The boy drew pictures of people at an airport which was waiting for their
planes.
9. People who works in the hunger program they estimate that 3500 people in the
world die from starvation every day of the year.
10. In one corner of the marketplace, an old man who was playing a violin.
