Lesson Idea Name: Statistics within the Classroom

Content Area: Mathematics

Grade Level: 7th grade

Content Standard Addressed:

MGSE7.SP.1 Understand that statistics can be used to gain information about a population by
examining a sample of the population; generalizations about a population from a sample are valid
only if the sample is representative of that population. Understand that random sampling tends to
produce representative samples and support valid inferences.

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will watch the short video on brain pop and take the quiz to make sure they understand
all the key ideas from the brain pop video. Students will work in pairs and decide on a topic
where they can gather information about a sample of a population (fifty students in the school).
For example: What is your favorite subject? Math, Science, English, Reading, or History.
Students will individually write a paragraph each about their findings.
Students will take the data that they gathered and put it in a bar graph. Students will color each
bar a different color so they can clearly see the difference between each subcategory. This will
give students a visual representation of the data found.
Reflective Practice:
A way I can extend this assignment is to have students take the same topic but have a different
population. For example: their population can be the people on their baseball team instead of
students at their school. Students will need time outside of class to do this.
