THE PAST CONTINUOUS

The past continuous to form the verb in the past continuous you
need to correct form ‘to be’
(was or were) and the-ing( gerund) form of the verb.
Watching tv.
She Reading a book.
He was Going to cinema.
It Playing basketball
i Raining.
They were
We
you
Spelling rules
1) Mostly the verb gets on-ing in the present continuous tense
Tense. E.g: starting, playing,looking, skilling
2) If the verb is monosyllabic, it ends with a
vowel+consonant, and the vowel is short
(pronounciation)then the consonant at the end of the verb
doubles. E.g: run=running
3) If the verb ends with L it doubles. E.g: travelling
4) If the verb is multisyllabic and 2nd point holds true of the
last syllable the the consonant at the
5) If the verb ends with mute –e, you have to leave it out
E.g:make=making
6) There are verbs ending with –ie like ‘lie’ In the gerund
form the ie changes into’y’
7) E.g:lie=lying
8) Other verbs: outline, tie, untie,…etc.

Execptions
There are some verbs that we don’t use in the past
continuous tense.( because they aren’t action verbs.)
E.g: like, love, hate, smell, seem, believe, understand,
realise, belong, know, want, need, depend, suppose,,,

The past continuous is used to indicate that something

happened over a period of time .this verb form is used to
show that happened before now and can still be going on at
this time.They are used with active action words in the
form of the past participles ending in “-ing” they are used
with “be” verbs. To form the past continuous use the past
tense of be verb (was/were) +verb+ing

Past continuous
To discuss things that happened in the past
 They were studying all night
 He was sleeping during class.
  I was waiting for a long time.
Past continuous
To discuss something that happened in the middle of
something else.
 The children was sleeping when we got home
 I was watching a movie when you called
 People were sleeping when the smoke detector went
off.
Past continuous
To discuss something that continued to happen for a longer
period of time
 My head was hurting
 Everyone was screaming
 The holiday shoppers were rushing.
Negative past continuous
The negative past continuous tells about things that did not
happen. To make the negative present continuous.used be”
verb +not+prsent participle”.
