Math Worksheet: Use scratch to explain fractions


The purpose of the current worksheet is to present how we can use Scratch to explain
fractions.

Scenario: The basic sprite of the project is a pizza. We create different costumes of the
same pizza object divided into pieces to explain the concepts: the whole, piece and
fractions.

1. Paint the initial sprite


a) click on paint new sprite
b) paint the pizza

2. Create different costumes for the


same pizza: the same pizza divided into
8 pieces, present the pizza with
fractions etc.
Use duplicate option.

a) Add the numbers 1 and 8 by using
the choose spite from library option.
b) paint the faction line and the
equality symbol as separated sprites

4. Use switch to costume block to


display the desired costume of the
sprite.
5. Record instructions for the user
(Sounds tab  record new sound) and
use play sound block to play each
recording.
6. Ask the user to express each pizza as
a fraction. Use ask block for numerator
and denominator.
7. If the answer is correct broadcast a
message to show or hide the
appropriate numbers.

8. For each number use the when I
receive event, hide and show blocks to
make them visible or invisible.

According to the lesson purpose,


teacher can easily use the above blocks
to form the desired project.

Challenge: Instead of pizza, paint a


chocolate divided into equal pieces and
use the chocolate sprite to teach
fractions.
