Acknowledgement:

I would like to express my special thanks of gratitude to our

principal xxxxx as well as my physics teacher Mr. xxxxx who
gave me the opportunity to perform this experiment which
helped me to understand the topic more deeply. I would also
like to thank the lab assistant xxxx who made the apparatus
available for my project.
I also extend my sincere gratitude to my group member to help
and cooperate with me to accomplish this project.

Aim:

To study the variations, in current flowing, in a circuit

containing LDR, because of a variation:

 In the power of incandescent lamp (of fixed power), used

to illuminate the LDR (keeping all the lamps at a fixed
distance).
Apparatus:
 Incandescent lamps

 An LDR

 Multimeter

 Meter scale

 Battery(6 V)

 Tapping key
Theory:

1) LDR and its characteristics

A light dependent resistor (LDR) is prepared from

cadmium sulphide. Its resistance depends upon
the intensity and duration of light incident on it.
With increase of distance of the source of light,
the intensity of light decreases inversely as
square of the distance.
When light is incident on it, a photon is absorbed
and thereby it excites an electron from valence
band into conduction band. Due to such new
electrons coming up in conduction band area, the
electrical resistance of the device decreases.

Thus the LDR or photo-conductive transducer has

the resistance which is the inverse function of
radiation intensity.

Procedure:
 Study the current in the circuit due to variation in the
power of lamps
1. Using the components, make the circuit.
2. Adjust the source of light i.e., lamp so that falls normally on
LDR by fixing the source of light in a stand and keeping LDR
vertically below it.
3. Set the knob of multimeter on the point marked d.c. current.
4. Keeping the lamp at a fixed distance from LDR, place a thick
piece of black paper on the LDR, so that no light fall on LDR,
now record the current in multimeter.
5. Now remove the black paper from LDR and switch on the
lamp of 15W over the LDR and again record the current from
the multimeter.
6. Now replace the lamp 15W by 6Wand 10W and everytime
measure the current with the help of multimeter.
7. While taking the observation with the different lamps,
remember the distance between lamp and LDR must be same
for all the lamps, and time duration (say 1 minute) also
remains same for all the observations.
8. Record all the observations in Table.

Observation:
1. Table for current and power of lamps

S. No. Power of lamps Current (mA)

1. With black paper 1 X 10-3

2. 6W 2 X 10-3

3. 10W 4 X 10-3

4. 15W 5 X 10-3

Result:
1. From Table 1, it is concluded that, with increase
in intensity of light, the resistane of LDR decreases
and hence current flowing in the circuit containing
LDR increases.
2. From Table 2, it is concluded that, when distance
of lamp (of fixed power) from LDR increases, the
intensity of light decreases and resistance of LDR
increases of LDR increases so that current flowing in
the circuit containing LDR decreases.
