Fusion Phase Transition Substance Solid Liquid Internal Energy Heat Pressure Temperature Melting Point Ions Molecules
a substance from a solid to a liquid. This occurs when the internal energy of the solid
increases, typically by the application of heat or pressure, which increases the
substance's temperature to the melting point. At the melting point, the ordering
of ions or molecules in the solid breaks down to a less ordered state, and the
solid melts to become a liquid
.
Freezing is a phase transition in which a liquid turns into a solid when its temperature is
lowered below its freezing point. In contrast, solidification is a similar process where a liquid
turns into a solid, not by lowering its temperature, but by increasing the pressure that it is
under] Despite this technical distinction, the two processes are very similar and the two terms
are often used interchangeably.
Deposition is the geological process in which sediments, soil and rocks are added to
a landform or land mass. Wind, ice, water,
and gravity transport previously weathered surface material, which, at the loss of
enough kinetic energy in the fluid, is deposited, building up layers of sediment.
An endothermic process is any process which requires or absorbs energy from its surroundings,
usually in the form of heat. It may be a chemical process, such as dissolving salt in water, or
simply the melting of ice cubes. The term was coined by Marcellin Berthelot from the Greek
roots endo-, derived from the word "endon" (ἔνδον) meaning "within", and the root "therm"
(θερμ-), meaning "hot" or "warm" in the sense that a reaction depends on absorbing heat if it is
to proceed. The opposite of an endothermic process is an exothermic process, one that
releases, "gives out" energy in the form of heat. Thus in each term (endothermic & exothermic)
the prefix refers to where heat goes as the reaction occurs, though in reality it only refers to
where the energy goes, without necessarily being in the form of heat.
An exothermic reaction is a chemical reaction that releases energy through light or heat. It is
the opposite of an endothermic reaction.[1]
Condensation is the change of the physical state of matter from gas phase into liquid phase,
and is the reverse of vapourisation.
Evaporation is a type of vaporization that occurs on the surface of a liquid as it changes into the
gas phase when it reaches its boiling point.[1] The surrounding gas must not be saturated with
the evaporating substance.
