Dissertation The effects of reproducing a 2D Animated
Enquiry film into live action.
 Differences between traditional and digital works – works of art,
music, media, electronics etc.
 Literature adaptation – works of literature that we remade into
movies that the authors were not happy with, for example: The
shining, Mary Poppins etc
Chapter 3  Lion king (2019 remake) – Like for like CGI remake of the original
Case Studies 2D animated 1994 film
 Ghost in a shell (2017) – western live action remake of the
Japanese 1995 animated version
 Full Metal Alchemist (2018) – Japanese Live action remake of the
2009 animated series Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
 The differences between traditional and digital works
o Examples of Traditional and Digital Practices
o How digital loses the meaning that traditional has.
o Digital involves more computerised techniques.
o Traditional as in the work is hand made with natural techniques.
 How this translates into animation
o Traditional is 2D animation
Key Themes o The ‘wood work’ is the hand made animation by the animators, hand
drawn frame by frame
and Issues o Remaking a piece of 2D animation into live action loses all the magic that
2D animation had
 The effects of live action
o The reproduction of the original
o Like for like
o Brings nostalgia to audiences
o A carbon copy / becomes more real that real (impersonating the real)
o Loses some of the stylistic choices the original had
 Walter Benjamin – The work of art in the Age of mechanical
reproduction – The Aura of works of art and how the Mechanical
reproduction devalues them.
Theoretical  Linda Hutcheon - A theory of adaptation – discuses the
frameworks development of creative adaptation, looks into different types of
media adaptation and analyses the differences
and theorists  Jean Baudrillard – Simulacra & Simulation – Discussions around
Simulation and the stages of it’s intensity. The highest level of
simulation removes the distinction between reality and originality
is purely a concept.
 Adaptations : from text to screen, screen to text by Deborah Cartmell
(199:1999) ‘THOU ART TRANSLATED’ Analysing Animated Adaptation – Paul
Wells
 How animated shorts have adapted from literature works
 The work of Art in the age of Mechanical Reproduction by Walter Benjamin
(1935)
 To discuss the differences between Traditional art and Digital reproduction and
how the digital replica loses meaning
 A theory of Adaptation by Linda Hutcheon (2006)
 Discuss levels of adaptation and how they apply to live action remakes

Books  Digital Animation by Andrew Chong (2007)

 Explore the history of digital animation and the developments it’s made
throughout the years
 Animation art by Ryan Ball (2004)
 Why? To pick a collection of works and discuss why the short works well within the
animation medium
 Screen Adaptation by Deborah Cartmell (2010)
 Further discussions of literature adaptation
 Simulacra & Simulation by Jean Baudrillard (1994) [ebook]
 Why? To prove that the realness of live action adaptations becomes a replica of
reality but hold no concept of originality

Figure 1. The Lion King Remake (2019) vs the Figure 2. Ghost in a Shell Remake (2017) vs Original Animated
Original animated (1994) (1995)
-Like for like - Released in 2017
-Recycled materials - Impressive visuals and improved concept
-Produced exactly the same but in CGI - Was received with mixed reviews
- Lacks certain magic that the original had

Figure 3. Disney Using Rotoscoping for Alice in Wonderland (1951)

- Converting live action into Stylised Animation
- Animated adaptation of the Book
- Later on the animated movie was remade into a live action
- Live action material turned into animation and then later on into a live action
movie

 Discussions around certain artists refusing to use digital electronics
and why they prefer to use more traditional methods.

 Is Disney's remake of The Lion King too nostalgic? Child, B (2018)

 Reasons why the Lion king remake may have recycled too much of
the original materials from the remake.

due to budget limitations – causes a shortened storyline with lesser
articles characters compared to the original.
