THE FAST-PACED “CRAZY EIGHTS” GAME FOR GUARANTEED FAMILY FUN!

Players: 2–1 0 Ages: 6 and up Duration: about 30 minutes

Components: 112 cards (72 color cards, 28 colored action cards, and 12 black action cards)

OBJECT OF THE GAME

The object of the game is to be the first player to get rid of all their cards.

GETTING READY TO PLAY

Shuffle all the cards together and deal eight cards to each player. Put the rest of the cards in the
middle of the table as a facedown draw pile.
Turn over the top card of the draw pile and place it face up on the table. This is the beginning
of the discard pile. If this card happens to be an action card, the first player must carry out the
required action.

PLAYING THE GAME

The player to the left of the dealer takes the first turn, with play passing to the left. On their turn,
a player must do one of the following:

1. DISCARD 1 CARD
Play a matching card onto the discard pile. A card is matching if it shows the same color, the same
number, or the same action symbol as the top card on the discard pile. Any black action card
always counts as matching (they are “wild cards”). Then the turn to play passes to the next player.

Example: The top card of the discard pile is a red 9, so a player can discard a 9 of any color, a red
card showing any number, a red action card, or a black action card.
If a blue 9 was played on top of the red 9, the next player could play either another 9, any blue
number card, a blue action card, or any black action card.

or or

2. DRAW 1 CARD
If a player cannot or does not want to discard a card on their turn, they must draw 1 card from
the draw pile. If that card matches the top card of the discard pile, they may play it immediately.
Otherwise, they must add it to their hand. Play then passes to the next player (unless a player
interjects, of course).

INTERJECTING
If a player has the exact same card in their hand as the top card of the discard pile, they may dis-
card that card immediately—even if it is not their turn! This is called “interjecting”. After a player
interjects, play passes to the next player after the “interjector”.
Important: If the Interjected card is an action card, it still take effect normally—meaning that the
next player must carry out the required action!

ACTION CARDS
Colored action cards can be played when a card of the same color or with the same symbol is on
top of the discard pile. Black action cards are like “wild cards”: they can be played on any card.

SKIP A TURN
Skip a Turn cards come in four colors (red, green, blue, and yellow), and can
be played on a matching card. When a Skip a Turn card is played, the player
who would normally take the next turn cannot discard or draw a card. Instead,
their turn is “skipped over”, and play passes to the next player after that.
CHANGE DIRECTION
Change Direction cards come in four colors (red, green, blue, and yellow), and
can be played on a matching card. When a Change Direction card is played,
the order of play changes immediately, going back the other way. So, if the
turn had been passing to the left, it will now pass to the right: it’s now the turn
of the player to the right of the one who played the Change Direction card.

DRAW 2
Draw 2 cards come in four colors (red, green, blue, and yellow), and can be
played on a matching card. When a Draw 2 card is played, the next player must
draw two cards from the draw pile before they take their normal turn. But, that
player can “extend” the Draw 2 by immediately playing their own Draw 2 card
instead of drawing. If they do, the next player after that must draw four cards,
unless they can extend it again by playing another Draw 2, and so on.
The player who has to draw cards (two or more) still gets to take their normal
turn, by either discarding or drawing a card.

SWAP CARDS WITH ANOTHER PLAYER

Swap Cards come in four colors (red, green, blue, and yellow), and can be
played on a matching card. When a player plays one of these cards, they
choose any other player in the game and they swap all the cards in their
hands.

CHOOSE A COLOR
This black action card can be played no matter which card is on top of the dis-
card pile. This card lets a player change the color to any color of their choice
(red, green, blue, or yellow) by calling out that color. The next player must play
a card of the chosen color (or a black action card, of course).

Example: Suzi plays a Choose a Color card on the discard pile and says “I call
RED”. The next player must discard a red card or a black action card of their
own, or else they’ll have to draw a card.

DRAW 4 + CHOOSE A COLOR

This black action card can be played no matter which card is on top of the
discard pile. This card has two effects:
• The player of the Draw 4 + Choose a Color card can name the color of their
choice, just like a Choose a Color card; and
• The next player must draw four cards from the draw pile, unless they can
extend by playing a Draw 4 + Choose a Color card of their own!
A player who had to draw four (or more) cards still takes a normal turn after-
wards, by either playing or drawing a card.

SWAP CARDS IN TURN

This black action card can be played no matter which card is on top of the
discard pile. When it is played, all players must pass all of the cards in their
hands to the next player, in the current direction of play!
The next player may play any card on top of a Swap Cards in Turn card.

END OF THE GAME

If a player only has one card left in their hand, they must clearly call out “SOLO!” before the next
player discards or draws a card, to alert the others that they only have one card left. A player who
forgets to call out “SOLO!” must immediately draw two cards as a penalty.
If a player discards their last card, the round ends at once, and that player wins the round. If the last
card was an action card, that action is not carried out by the next player.
The other players must each add up the value of all the cards they have left in their hand. The total
is written down as penalty points. The game is played until at least one player has collected more
than 500 penalty points. The player with the fewest penalty points wins the game!
