Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The UDL principles are met through the availability of closed captioning.
Closed captioning is helpful for all students. Closed captions help hearing impaired students by allowing the
student to read what is on the screen rather than having to rely on hearing what is said. Closed captions also
help ELL connect the spoken words to the written information to better enhance their vocabulary. Overall,
closed caption reinforce the material that is being taught.

Lesson idea implementation: The lesson will begin with the teacher saying a few well know sayings that use
figurative speech such as idioms. The teacher will then ask the students the meaning of these phrases and
express how these sayings say one thing, but they mean something different. The teacher will then show

students a Brainpop video to reinforce the concept of idioms. The class will then take a short quiz about
idioms on Brainpop following the video. The video will be a form of an informal assessment in order to gauge
where the students are in their comprehension for the concept. The teacher will allow the students to ask
questions regarding the use of idioms. After, the teacher will introduce students to the short story called “
The Odd Man Out”. In this story students will be required to highlight the idioms then determine what the
idioms mean.

Reflective Practice: This lesson could be supported by giving additional video as resources. Also students can
try to make their own idioms which will require higher level thinking.
