Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: Students can pick a hero that they are interested in to research.
Representation: The Brain Pop video offers auditory and visual information.
Action and Expression: Students will be able to create a multimedia presentation and present it to the
class.

Lesson idea implementation: Start the lesson by asking students what they know about Jackie Robinson, and
filling it in under the K in a KWL chart. Then I will tell the students some of Jackie Robinson’s background and
ask students what they would like to know and fill it in under the W of the chart. Next, I will display the Jackie
Robinson Brain Pop video. The video talks about how Robinson became the first African American MLB player,
playing for the Dodgers, and how he inspired other civil rights activists and became a leader off the field.

Students will be given a spider map template, where they’ll write Jackie Robinson in the center and add details
around it that made Jackie a hero.
After this, students will be given a lap top. Students will be invited to think of Jackie Robinson or someone
from history that they think of as a hero. They will be given time to research the person. Students will have the
opportunity to create a presentation about their hero that they can present to the class.

Reflective Practice: After designing this lesson idea, I feel that students will enjoy learning about Jackie
Robinson through the Brain Pop video. Students will be interested in the video and the way the information is
presented. I think students will benefit by using technology to research one of their own heroes and presenting
it to the class. Using this as an introductory activity, the lesson could be extended by researching other African
American baseball players that were able to play because of Robinson breaking the color barrier. If this unit
lined up with Jackie Robinson day, students could cut out the number 42 and let go to other classrooms in the
school to talk about Robinson and his significance. Some other technology tools that could further enhance
this project are e-books and online games.
