Science Fair Assessment
Science Fair Assessment
20182019 Science Fair
Assess how you conducted your experiment.
● Please move this document to your shared Biology folder.
● To complete this, you will need to refer to your project proposal.
● After you answer all the questions, remember to submit the document in Canvas .
Sample size
1. Below, put what you planned for sample size and/or repeated measures (#9 in experimental proposal).
I put that I would have 8‑10 Galloway ninth graders and play each of them two or three songs.
2. Below, put the actual sample size and/or repeated measures you completed by the deadline (February
5).
I tested 8 Galloway ninth graders and played them two songs each.
3. If there are differences between your initial plan and what you completed by the deadline, explain
a) why they are different, and
I didn’t end up asking questions before and after the testing, because Ms. Sanders and I agreed that
they could think about their answers and maybe not answer truthfully
b) what you could have done differently to reach your goal on time.
I reached my goal on time!
Procedure
4. Below, paste a copy of your planned steps from your project proposal (#15).
a. I will be testing 8‑10 Galloway 9th Graders, playing each of them about 3 or 4 songs. I will be
observing a multitude of behaviors from my subjects for the duration of the tests.
i. Before I start testing anybody, I will do a few sample tests so that I can assign numbers to
each emotion or movement, as well as adding a few questions. All of the numbers will be
converted into a percentage for a bar graph when all testing is done.
ii. Hopefully, the tests will be conducted in the library Quiet Room, so as to have no
distractions, but empty classrooms would be okay as well.
b. Before we begin the testing, I will communicate to the subject that the test is 100% optional and we
can stop any time they’d like, and that the test is confidential to everyone but myself and Ms.
Sanders.
c. They will receive a Mandala to color in and headphones to put on. They will color for about a
minute, at which point I will start the music and observe reactions and body movements and body
language. After I do pilot testing, each reaction and movement will have an assigned number.
i. Happiness expressions will be on the positive number range (i.e. 1‑10, or 1‑5) whereas
negative expressions (such as frowns, grimaces) will be negative numbers (‑1‑ (‑10) or (‑1 ‑
(‑5)) with (‑10) or (‑5)) being the worst.
ii. I will have a printout of microexpressions with me to immediately document what I see, as
well as a list of movements that they could be making.
d. Once all songs are done and they are done coloring, I will ask the same questions about how they
are feeling that I asked before we started testing, after which they can leave.
e. After all tests are concluded, I will take the numbers and data that I have, convert them into
percentages, and make a bar graph from them.
5. Carefully look over your initial plans. In a numbered or bullet‑pointed list below,
a) identify in detail things you actually did differently, and
b) explain why you made each change.
● I did not ask questions before or after the testing because people would have time to think about
their answers and may not answer truthfully.
● I only played 2 songs to avoid too many variables
● I changed the number scale to numerizing how much their expressions changed, because it was
too hard to quantify an emotion.
Variables
6. In your proposal, find your standardized (#8) and extraneous variables (#10) and list them in the table
below.
Standardized variables Extraneous variables
Lyrics/non‑lyrics, tempo, headphones, room Music familiarity, music preferences,
7. Standardized variable review:
Did you successfully standardize all the variables you planned to?
If not, explain why not.
Yes, I was able to get all variables that needed to be standardized to be the same.
8. Extraneous variable review:
Were there other factors (that you did not originally list) that you think could have affected your results?
Identify them and explain your answer.
I didn’t expect people to be distracted by the videoing, but some were embarrassed and kept
looking at the camera and smiling or laughing.
Impact on Results
9. Think about all the ways the implementation of your experiment differed from your initial plans (your
answers to questions above).
Discuss how these changes may make your project stronger and/or make it weaker (i.e. make your
results more reliable or less reliable).
I think that all of my changes were made for the better of my project and to make it easier for my
subjects, so overall I think that they helped.
Reflection on learning
In August, y’all shared your thoughts on what the point of school is. Many of your responses involved
building skills. You may recognize some of them in this list below, which has a few of my top priorities for
skills to build in this class.
10. Read over the skills and indicate with a comment where you feel you are with each, at this point in the
year.
I think I have I’m making progress. I’m struggling: I see This is a very weak
very strong I feel pretty good some improvement area for me. I don’t feel
skills in this about it. but it’s really hard. I’ve improved at all.
