Encountering Idea:

Why is it made of metal?

Electrical wires are made of copper because......
Alloy wheels are made from aluminium because .....
Jewelry is made out of gold because ....

Expected Answers;
Because it is strong and cheap
Because it is very good conductor for electricity
Because it is easy to shape and has a reflective surface
Because it is shiny, resist corrosion and can break and form easily

(T.N.: Learners responses may varies)

b. Explore
 Discussion of the objective of the activity
 Learners will work as a group
 Suggested Time allotment: 20 minutes

Activity
Metals and Non Metals

(See the attached copy)

c. Explain
Power point presentation
Slide 1: Picture of the Periodic Table of Elements
Slide 2: Brief Background
Slide 3: Identifying metals and non-metals in the periodic table
Slide 4: Sample pictures for Metals
Slide 5-11: Properties of Metals
Slide12-17: Properties of Non-metals
Slide 19-21: properties of Metalloids

From the power point presentation and activity, learners will able to;
 Describe the appearance of the materials as metals and non metals
 Properties of Metals and Mon-metals

Metals Non-metals
 Metals are generally solids.  Non-metals are found in all three
(Exception: mercury, gallium) states
 Metals are heavy. (Exception: sodium,  Non-metals are generally light in
potassium, magnesium) weight
 They are hard and nonbrittle  Solid non-metals are hard but brittle
(Exception: sodium, potassium and
lead which are soft
 They are good conductors of heat and  They are bad conductors of heat and
electricity (Exception: Lead) electricity (Except graphite)

 They are ductile and malleable  They are neither ductile nor malleable
 Their melting point and boiling point  Their melting point and boiling point
are generally high are generally low
 They generally produce ringing sound  They do not produce ringing sound
on collision
 They are generally lustrous and can be  They are generally non-lustrous and
polished cannot be polished

Unlocking of Terms:
 malleable = can be hammered into thin sheets
 Ductile = can be drawn into thin wire
 Brittle = can easily break
 Luster = ability to reflect light
