3. An isotope of Phosphorus, referred to as P-32, is commonly used in
biological research. P-32 has an atomic mass of 32.
a. How many neutrons in one atom of P-32?

i. 32-15= 17

b. Sulfur also has an atomic mass of 32. Why are P-32 and Sulfur

still considered to be totally different atoms?

i. Because Phosphorus has a different number of protons,

which is why it is number 15 on the periodic table. Sulfur

has 16 protons. You cannot change the number of protons

in an atom, because each element on the table has a

unique number.
