San Isidro Sur is a barangay in the municipality of Luna, in the province of
Apayao. It was once called “Kat-kat’l”. Since, the municipal district of Luna had as its first name “Macatel”, which means in the Ibanag dialect “itchy- water”. It was changed to “Luna” by the town’s founding father, the Ilocano explorer Antonio Barroga from Dingras, Ilocos Norte. After then, barangays at Luna Apayao had its better version of names, but not all barangays name changed. And now, the first name “Kat-kat’l” is now turned into Barangay San Isidro Sur, Luna, Apayao and had grew better.
II. PATTERNS OF LIVING AND SURVIVAL
Apayao is devoted to agricultural production, particularly food and industrial crops such as rice, corn, coffee, root crops and vegetables. But in our barangay we are more on rice and corn production and it served as our source of living and survival. When the time of harvesting corn and rice came, we harvest and dry the rice and corn until ready to sell. Some, survived in their Sari-sari stores or Grocery’s and also part of their pattern of living especially when they don’t work in the government. The patterns of living of the children, they go to school to learn and after class, they play outdoors or indoors. Same with students, either Junior or Senior High School they go to school but some may have their part time jobs as the source of their survival to meet their needs. Especially, when parents may not afford the fees in school. Also College students, they went school, have their OJT’s or they might also have their part time jobs as an addition to their survival. Teachers, they teach lessons, checked lots of papers and consumed their time in school works, their hardships contributes to their payment and severed as their survival. Office workers, they went to office to do tons of works and their payment served as their survival. Doctors, they treat patients with severe cases and do checkups, in this pattern of living they also get their payment depends on patients consulted in the Hospital.
III. CULTURE OF THE COMMUNITY
FORMAL Barangay assembly a meeting to update on the proceeds of funds and all concerns with the barangay. Its schedule may vary depending on the approved schedule of the Barangay council. It is usually conducted at the Barangay Gymnasium. Livelihood projects like poultry raising, training of farmers, and meeting about the improvement of infrastructures. They do Liga or sports activities. Clean and green programs or clean up drive. Senior Citizens Medical Activities and Senior Citizens Day. INFORMAL Helping hand when there is an occasion. Also, when starting to build a house. In the first day, Older men are usually willing to help without any replacement/payment, just feed them or give snacks. In Ilocano they called this “Bataris”.
