What are the characteristics of a good teacher?

The profession of teaching is one of the most important in the world, because without teachers
nobody could acquire the competences needed in life or even reach a professional career. We
owe our teachers more than we can imagine; recall who taught you how to read and how to sum
or do a multiplication, let me tell you that it was your teacher in elementary school. Given the
importance of teaching, all the teachers must be aware of which are the characteristics that every
good teacher should have, therefore, in this essay it is going to be stated which are these charac-
teristics.

First, and maybe the essential is to have deep knowledge about the subject that they are teaching
to their students. If a teacher lacks knowledge in a subject, that deficiency of understanding is
passed along to their students. However, this characteristic by itself in most of the cases is not
enough because you can have, even, a doctor’s degree but it is impossible for you to give a lesson.

Secondly, an excellent teacher should have good communication skills. This is important because
if a teacher’s communication skills are good, they can transmit knowledge in a more efficient way.
Communication skills are relevant when a subject has a high level of complexity; difficult defini-
tions or algorithms become easier and enjoyable when a teacher with awesome communication
skills teaches.

Finally, passion for their subject is vital. The students can feel when a teacher is passionate about
their area, furthermore, the advantage of a passionate teacher its that he can convey this passion
and desire to learn on to their students, and when things are done with passion are easier and
better.

In conclusion, we can summarize these characteristics by saying that good teachers are persons
that has the ability to communicate well, a lot of passion, and enough experience and studies to
transmit the knowledge of a subject. When teachers fulfill these characteristics the process of
learning is faster and more significant, and that is beneficial for society, since good teachers bring
the world more skilled and competent people.
