Lesson Idea Name: Solar System

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 4th

Content Standard Addressed: S4E2(d). Students will model the position and motion of the earth in the solar
system and will explain the role of relative position and motion in determining sequence of the phases of the
moon. Demonstrates the relative size and order from the sun of the planets in the Solar System.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3- Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool: BrainPOP

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): BrainPOP is used to help meet the needs for every type of learner in a
classroom. This UDL provides audio (closed captions), video, and interactions with what is being presented. For
my ESL students, closed captions are available, so they can follow along while hearing the English language is
being played. BrainPOP is also easily accessible from the students’ home for the parents to have access to see
what their child is learning.
Engagement: Students will have the option on learning more about the content being presented.
Representation: BrainPOP is used to present content to students.
Action and Expression: The students will be able to select different videos and games/activities to test their
knowledge on what has been taught in class.
Lesson idea implementation: To begin the class the teacher will present a movie from BrainPOP on the Solar
System. This will allow all the students understand about the topic for the week/month. Once the video is
over the teacher will ask the students questions about what they just watched and then have them take the

BrainPOP quiz together as a class. This will also give the students a chance to ask any questions that they may
have about the topic. The teacher may have a model of the Solar System to share with the students. After the
model is presented, the students will be given a project. The project will be for them to create their own Solar
System model. They will be given the option to either work with a partner or solo. By doing this project the
students will be required to think outside the box and come up with an idea on how to make a model like the
one that was presented earlier.
The time length that the students will have to create their model will be 1 week. The teacher will give
students the opportunity to work 1 full day inside the classroom to think of ideas and really brainstorm. The
rest of the work time will be at home. The teacher may give the students maybe 30 minutes (or whatever free
time is given) to work on their project. In order for the project to be done correctly, the teacher will create a
rubric as a guide with instructions on how to get an A. At the end of the week all projects will be presented
and the students will explain their steps to creating their own model of our Solar System. While all projects
are being presented the teacher will have a copy of the rubric and take notes in order to come up with the
final grade.

Reflective Practice: After creating this lesson plan, I believe that the students will have a great experience and
it will increase their desire to learn. Some extra tools that I could include are iPads. This will help them find
different ideas for their projects and get different ideas from previous projects other students have created.
