Political Science Democracy is the most potent political idea in the world today, yet the future fof democracy is increasingly uncertain. Key assumptions of democratic thinking and practice are being undermined by diverse sites of social and economic power on the one hand, and by dense networks of regional and global interconnectedness on the other. States and societies are enmeshed in webs of international conditions and processes as never before, Democracy and the Global Order offers a highly original and systematic account of these issues. Part I assesses traditional conceptions of democracy. Part II traces the rise and displacement of the modern nation-state in the context of the interstate system and the world economy, Part IL explores the theoretical bases of democracy and of the democratic state, and the profound changes these concepts must undergo if they are to retain their relevance in the ‘century ahead. Finally, Part IV champions a “cosmopolitan” model of demoeracy—a new conception of democracy for a new world order. “David Held has produced a magisterial account of democratic theory as it applies to a world of intensifying global relations, 1 regard this book as indispensable reading for scholars and citizens alike—a comprehensive rethinking and remapping of the terrain of democracy." Richard Falk, Princeton University “International Relations seems to have been out of touch with the rest of political science and its theoretical advances. In his masterful and synthetic work, Held builds abridge tha ink the study of international relation tothe theory of the state and of democracy. His bold and suggestive normative construct of cosmopolitan democracy” outlines ways in which the principles ot ‘democracy can be preserved within the realities ofa global society of states.” Claus Offe, Humboldt University Berin ““Hel’s new book, the culmination of more than a decade's work, provides the first comprehensive rethinking of democratic theory from the perspective of globalization. No one interested in these issues can afford not to read it, and no ‘one who does can fail to learn from it.” Thomas McCarthy, Northwestern University David Held is Professor of Politics and Sociology at the Open University.
