Basic EIGRP Troubleshooting Commands

EIGRP is commonly used in large enterprise networks.

Components
There are a number of common reasons why an EIGRP neighbor adjacency might fail, including:

 The interface between the devices is down.

 The two routers have mismatching EIGRP autonomous system numbers.
 Proper interfaces are not enabled for the EIGRP process.
 An interface is configured as passive.

Some issues that may cause a connectivity problem for EIGRP include:
 Proper networks are not being advertised on remote routers.
 An incorrectly-configured passive interface, or an ACL, is blocking advertisements of remote
networks.
 Automatic summarization is causing inconsistent routing in a discontiguous network.

Layer 3 Connectivity:
A prerequisite for a neighbor adjacency to form between two directly connected routers is Layer 3
connectivity.

EIGRP Parameters
When troubleshooting an EIGRP network, one of the first things to verify is that all routers that are
participating in the EIGRP network are configured with the same autonomous system number.

Autosummarization:
Another issue that may create EIGRP routing problems is EIGRP automatic summarization.
Autosummarization is disabled by default in IOS 12.2 (33) and IOS 15.
Before IOS 12.2 (33) IOS 15 and, autosummarization was enabled by default. To disable automatic
summarization, enter the no auto-summary command in router EIGRP configuration mode.
