You may
• make a carpet or anything else using my design and even sell your work to
make lots of money :)
• if you use this pattern, it would be great if you e-mailed me its photo and
wrote a few things about yourself, like your name and where you're from,
etc...
You should
• if you use this pattern and put photos of your work on your blog or a website
or your Facebook page, you should always clearly state where the design
came from.
You may not
• claim this design to be yours,
• copy this design to your website or a blog (instead, provide a link to my blog
or my Ravelry account or my Facebook fanpage),
• reprint this design in a magazine or a book without asking me first and paying
me for it.

I made the Winter Carpet 2017 to share its pattern with my blog readers as part of a
crochet-along countdown from December 1st until the Christmas Eve in 2017. If
you’re curious, you can check it out here in Polish:

• part I – rounds 1 through 14

To make this carpet you will need:

• approximately 900 meters of cotton string 4 or 5 mm thick – of course, it’s
always better to order more string just to be on the safe side,
• a 9 mm crochet hook – it's size M or N in the US,
• about 8 hours of your time.

Magic Carpet Studio www.facebook.com/MagicCarpetStudio/
www.magiccarpetstudio.blogspot.com
No matter what string you use, remember one important thing: the crochet hook
needs to be twice as thick as the string! Otherwise the carpet will come out
crooked, it will also wobble or buckle.

I use the same kind of string they put in sweatshirts to tighten the hood. It can be
washed in an ordinary washing machine. I order my string from a factory in Poland:
http://www.polimex.net/sklep/index.php?page=Product&id=676&sid=68&lang=en
but I have no idea if they are willing to ship small quantities of string overseas.

Another important thing: you should be sitting on the carpet while crocheting it.
This way the carpet will appear as if it has already been washed and blocked –
because you have been ironing it with your buttocks the whole time. If you crochet
the carpet while sitting on the couch, it will come out crooked and uneven.
Remember, you will never be able to wash it and block it because it's just too big!

I will use the US crochet notation throughout this tutorial.

Round #1. Make a magic loop and in it make 16 dc. The first dc can be “pretended”
by 3 ch. Close the round with a slip stitch. You have 16 stitches all around.

Round #2. Make 2 dc in the back loop of each stitch. As usual, the first dc in this
round can be “pretended” by 3 ch. Close the round with a slip stitch. You have 32
stitches all around.

Round #3. Make 1 ch and 1 sc in the ss which

closed the last round. Repeat all around {sc, sc,
tc3-tog in the front loop between rounds #1
and #2, skip one stitch of round #2, sc}. Close
the round with a slip stitch. You have 8 groups of
3 sc and a petal.

You can see this round in a video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dO_VZD9YQ-Q

Magic Carpet Studio www.facebook.com/MagicCarpetStudio/
www.magiccarpetstudio.blogspot.com
Round #4. Slip stitch to the top of the
petal. Make 4 ch (they pretend to be a
tc) and then repeat {tc in the top of
the next petal, 5 ch, tc in the top of
the same petal} – omit the last tc in
the last repeat. Close the round with a
slip stitch. You have 8 ch5-spaces.

You can see this round in a video too:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=JiI2nETNuC8

Round #5. Make dc’s all around with a few exceptions:

• make a dc-increase in the 3rd ch in each ch5-space,
• make a dc-increase in the joining of two tc’s.
Close the round with a slip stitch. You have 64 stitches all around.

Round #6. This round should start at the

first dc made in the ch5-space. If you’re
not there, go there with slip stitches.
Repeat all around {6 dc, skip 2 dc, 4 ch}.
Close the round with a slip stitch. You
have 8 groups of 6 dc and ch4-spaces.

Magic Carpet Studio www.facebook.com/MagicCarpetStudio/
www.magiccarpetstudio.blogspot.com
Round 7. Slip stitch to the 3rd dc in a
group of 6 dc’s. Repeat {sc in the 3rd
dc, sc in the 4th dc, 12 tc in the ch4-
space}. Close the round with a slip
stitch. You have 8 groups waves of
12 tc separated by 2 sc.

Note: your work will look very nicely

and evenly if you make 12 tc as 3 tc
in each of the 4 ch!

Round 8. This round should start at

the first of the two sc’s. Make 4 ch
(they pretend to be a tc) and a tc in
the 2nd sc. Repeat {2 bpdc, 2bphdc,
4bpsc, 2 bphdc, 2 bpdc (← all made
on top of the wave), 2 tc (← made
in sc’s)}. Skip the last two tc in the
last repeat. Close the round with a
slip stitch. You have 112 stitches all
around.

Don’t worry, there’s a video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqRnlEuug4w

Round 9. Make sc’s all around with

one exception: make an sc-increase in
one of the two tc’s in each tc2-group.
In other words: make an increase in
every 14th stitch. Close the round with
a slip stitch. You have 120 stitches all
around.

www.magiccarpetstudio.blogspot.com
Round 10. I’m lost for words, you better see this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4-SRo1tu5M

You have 40 X’s all around. Each X stands on 3 stitches (the one in the middle is
empty) and has a ch2-space on top. Close the round with a slip stitch, as usual.

Round 11. In the previous round some of the X’s were based on top of a wave and
some X’s fell between the waves. In this round you should make 3 dc or 4 dc in
every ch2-space according to these rules:
• if the X falls between the waves, make 3 dc in it,
• each wave has four X’s based on it: make 4 dc in the outer two X’s and 3 dc
in the inner two X’s.
Close the round with a slip stitch. You have 136 stitches all around.
Or even better, have a look at this photo:

Magic Carpet Studio www.facebook.com/MagicCarpetStudio/
www.magiccarpetstudio.blogspot.com
Round 12. Slip stitch to the first dc
that falls in the first X based on the
wave. Repeat {5 dc, dc-inc, 2 dc, dc-
inc, 5 dc, 4 ch, skip 3 dc}. Close the
round with a slip stitch. You have 8
groups of 16 dc separated by ch4-
spaces. All ch4-spaces fall between
the waves made a few rounds ago.

Round 13. Slip stitch to the third dc.

Repeat {5 sc, 4 ch, skip 2 dc, 5 sc, 12
tc in the ch4-space}. Close the round
with a slip stitch. You have 8 waves,
8 ch4-spaces and everything is
separated by 5 sc.

Note: your work will look very nicely

and evenly if you make 12 tc as 3 tc
in each of the 4 ch!

Round 14. This round should be

started in the 1st sc to the left of the
wave. Repat all around {3 sc (in the
1st, 2nd and 3rd sc of the sc5-group),
12 tc in the ch4-space, 3 sc (in the
3rd,4th and 5th sc of the next sc5-
group), on top of the wave make: 2
bpdc, 2bphdc, 4 bpsc, 2 bphdc, 2
bpdc}. Close the round with a slip
stitch. You have 8 “old” waves with
back post stitches and 8 “new”
waves. Everything is separated by 3
sc.

Magic Carpet Studio www.facebook.com/MagicCarpetStudio/
www.magiccarpetstudio.blogspot.com
Round 15. In this round you are
working with two kinds of waves:
new waves made by 12 tc in the
previous round, and old waves
surrounded by back-post stitches in
the previous round. Two consecutive
waves are separated by 3 sc.

Start anywhere and repeat all around:

• on top of a new wave make: 2 bpdc, 2 bphdc, 4 bpsc, 2 bphdc, 2 bpdc.
• on top of an old wave make: 4 hdc, 4 sc, 4 hdc.
• between the waves, i.e. on top of the 3 sc group, make dc3-tog.
Close the round with a slip stitch.

Or just watch the video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUISMzkF_ag

Round 16. Make sc’s all around with

one exception: skip all the dc3-tog
made in the previous round. Close the
round with a slip stitch. You have
192 sc all around.

Round 17. Repeat round #10 (the one

with X’s). You have 64 X’s.

Round 18. Make alternately 4 dc and

3 dc in ch2-spaces. Close the round
with a slip stitch. You have 224 dc all
around.

Round 19. Some of the X’s in round #17 fall between the waves of previous rounds.
Start this round behind the dc’s located above such an X. Repeat {12 dc, 4 ch, skip 4
dc}. Close the round with a slip stitch. You have 32 ch4-spaces separated by groups
of 12 dc.

Magic Carpet Studio www.facebook.com/MagicCarpetStudio/
www.magiccarpetstudio.blogspot.com
Round 20. Repeat {sc in the 3rd, 4th
and 5th dc of the 12 dc group, 4 ch,
sc in the 8th, 9th and 10th dc of the 12
dc group, 12 tc in the ch4-space}.
Close the round with a slip stitch.
You have 32 waves alternating with
32 ch4-spaces. Everything is
separated by groups of 3 sc.

Round 21. This round should start at

the 1st sc behind the 12 tc wave.
Repeat {sc in the 1st sc of the 3 sc
group, 12 tc in the ch4-space, sc in
the 3rd sc of the next 3 sc group, 12
bpsc in the wave made in the
previous round}. Close the round
with a slip stitch. You have 2 kinds
of waves: new waves made by 12 tc
and old waves surrounded with 12
bpsc. There is 1 sc between two
consecutive waves.

Round 22. Just start anywhere and repeat all around:

• on top of a new wave make: 10 bpsc (skipping the 1st and the last tc), 3 ch.
• on top of an old wave make: 10 ss in the back loop (again skipping the 1st
and the last sc), 3 ch.
Close the round with a slip stitch. You have 32 ch3-spaces separated by groups of
10 stitches.

Magic Carpet Studio www.facebook.com/MagicCarpetStudio/
www.magiccarpetstudio.blogspot.com
Round 23. Make 9 dc in each ch3-
space and 4 sc (e.g. in the 4th, 5th, 6th
and 7th stitch) in the 10 stitch group.
Close the round with a slip stitch.
You have 32 waves.

Note: if your work begins to wobble,

maybe try to make less than 9 dc in
each ch3-space or less than 4 sc
between the waves. Don’t be afraid to
experiment!!!

Round 24. For each wave repeat:

1 bpdc (around the 1st stitch), 1 ch,
1 bpdc (around the 2nd stitch), 1 ch,
….,
1 bpdc (around the stitch before last), 1 ch,
1 bpdc (around the last stitch).
Skip all sc’s. Close the round with a slip stitch.

Round 25. Make 2 dc in each ch1-

space and 1 sc between the waves.
Close the round with a slip stitch.

Note: if your work wobbles, maybe

try to make this round without extra
sc’s between the waves?

Round 26. Make slip stitches all around in the back loop of dc’s. Skip the sc’s.

Close the round with a slip stitch, fasten off and admire your work :)
