Synopsis of Time for Murder

hotel
Monskwell

Miss Mollie Ralston is the owner of the Hotel Monkswell, a small hotel near
ho London. She
tel
l inherited
Monskwel
the hotel from her aunt. In the past, the hotel was a charming building. Now, it is run-down and
tatty. The original furniture and decor are looking old and tired. The floorboards squeak and there
is a scary, spooky atmosphere. You could say, it is the sort of place where a murder might happen.
Tonight is the first night that Miss Mollie will open the hotel to guests. She is tidying the hotel and
as the play begins there is an important radio broadcast...
There has been a murder in Paddington, in the centre of London.
The victim is a lady, her name is Maureen Lyon. Years ago, she was a foster
mother who was sentenced to jail for cruelty to her children.
The police are looking for a suspect in connection with the murder.
The suspect is wearing a dark coat, a white scarf and a red hat.
The radio is switched off and the guests begin to arrive at
the hotel. First to arrive is Mr. Christopher Wren, a student
of architecture. He is very impressed with the hotel. Next to
arrive is Mrs. Boyle. Mrs. Boyle is a serious and severe woman.
She used to be a magistrate in court and she complains a lot,
especially about the hotel. Third to arrive is Miss. Casewell,
a young socialist with a troubled past. Following the arrival of
Miss Casewell is the Commander Metcalf. Commander Metcalf
is a member of the army and is a sensible and handsome man.
The last person to arrive is an unexpected guest. He is a man
called Paravicini. He says that his car has crashed on the road
outside and he needs a hotel for the night. He appears to have a
strong Italian accent and behaves suspiciously. As the evening
unfolds, all the guests begin to act more and more strangely.
There is a sudden call from the police to inform Miss Mollie of a problem. The phone line is cut, but
then a policeman, named Sergeant Trotter, arrives at the hotel. Sergeant Trotter starts to tell Miss
Mollie a story connected to the murder in London. It is the story that we have heard about on the
radio. The story that Sergeant Trotter tells is about the foster mother Maureen Lyon and the three
children she abused. The children are known as the “Three Blind Mice”. When they were children
they lived on a farm near to the hotel. The youngest child, a boy, died because of the cruelty and
Maureen Lyon was sent to jail. The two older children, a boy and a girl were sent away and now
nobody knows where they are. Trotter says that he thinks one of them has killed Maureen Lyon
and is coming to Hotel Monkswell to kill again! He believes the “Three Blind Mice” are seeking
their revenge. The guests in the Hotel Monkswell are not who they seem to be and soon another
murder could take place...but who could be the killer and what is the true identity of the guests?
We shall soon see....

SESSION 1: SYNOPSIS AND CHARACTERS

Working in pairs, imagine that you and your partner work for the radio station in
London. You must rehearse a radio broadcast to warn people about a murderer
who is ‘on the run’. One person must be the newsreader and the other person
must be the weather man or weather woman.

If you are the newsreader, think about:

• the description of the suspect

• the place and time of the murder
• the type of crime
• will kill again…
• what to do if you see the suspect

If you are the weatherman or weatherwoman, consider:

• what the weather is like

• will the weather get worse..
• what people should do to stay safe
• what precautions to take

After you have rehearsed your broadcast, those who want to can perform it to the
rest of the class.

Activity 1: Making a Complaint

At Hotel Monkswell, certain characters like to complain, and others have to apologise.

Take a look at the following sentences. Next to each sentence, write down whether
you think it is a complaint, and or an apology?

MRS. BOYLE: Nobody came to pick me up at the train station, where complaint
was the taxi?!

MOLLIE: I’m sorry, but I’m here by myself. Today is the hotel’s opening apology
day you see.

MRS. BOYLE: Ms. Ralston! The radiators are cold, there’s no hot water, the
room is very dirty, and someone left an old sock in there. Give me another
room!

MRS. BOYLE: I am freezing to death in the library, the radiators are still cold.
Do something about it now!

MOLLIE: My apologies Mrs. Boyle. I have checked the radiator in your room
and it is working perfectly now.

MRS. BOYLE: Turn down the volume on the radio! There’s no way of
concentrating here!

MISS. CASEWELL: Oh dear, I’m so sorry!

Are the complaints above polite or rude? How can you say things more politely in
English? Try and practise a few ways in class.

Listen to TRACK 7. Sergeant Trotter has arrived to investigate the murder of Maureen Lyon
and begins to tell a story about the three children and the farm close to the hotel.

Once you have finished listening to the Track, read the story below. The story
should be in the past tense, but the regular verbs in brackets ( ) need to be changed.

E.g. (to murder) → murdered

Then, underline the irregular verbs which are also in the past tense.

Maureen Lyon was (to murder) __________ in London. The murder (to happen)
______________ yesterday. Miss. Mollie, of Hotel Monkswell knew Maureen Lyon, but
by her old name of Maureen Stanning.

SESSION 3: TOWARD THE END

Activity 1: Giving Stage Directions 8

In every theatre company there is a director. The director’s job is to organise and direct the
actors who play the characters. In order for the actors to play their roles well, the director gives
the ‘stage directions’.
The director wants the actors to act in a way that expresses the feelings in the play and the
atmosphere on stage. Stage directions are written in a script between brackets and they usually
include an adverb + “ly” word, for example …

Trotter: (Behaving oddly a strangely) Ms. Ralston, Can I take a look at the house?
Mollie: (She says this politely) Yes, of course.
Com. Metcalf: (Suspiciously) I’ll go with you.

Listen to TRACK 8. “Trotter Starts Investigating’. Commander Metcalf is becoming

suspicious of something and insists on following Trotter outside the hotel. Miss.
Casewell is also becoming nervous. Mollie too is beginning to question things.

Whilst you are listening, think about what ‘stage directions’ the director gave to the
actors.

Here are some more adverbs to look at.

strangely oddly bravely nicely

kindly politely carefully

quickly
slowly
suspiciously happily merrily

horridly grumpily angrily noisily

loudly quietly softly reluctantly

enthusiastically questioningly sarcastically gently

comfortingly aggressively scarily proudly

Here are three extracts from the play. Choose one to act out in groups. Before you start
rehearsing, look back at your character profiles from Session 1, Activity 1. Also, consider what
you have learnt about ‘stage directions’. Try and use some of these to help each other play the
characters.

Put the lines in the correct order that you hear them on the track. Number them 1 - 7

Example: 1-«Say your alphabet!»:

Extract One – Track 3

Characters: Mollie; Paravicini; Mrs. Boyle.
What is happening: Paravicini arrives as an unexpected guest at the hotel. Mrs. Boyle
is not happy.

The bell rings.

Mollie:(Off stage) I’m coming!
Paravicini: Buona sera… ehhh…. Where am I?
Mollie: At the Monkswell Hotel.
Paravicini: (Kissing Mollie’s hand) Mamma Mía! How lucky I am! A hotel! And with a
young and beautiful hostess!
Mrs. Boyle: A beginner!
Paravicini: I guess you don’t have a free room for an old man who got lost in the
snow…. I had the misfortune to crash my Rolls-Royce, I thought I would freeze to death,
but suddenly I saw some light! Madonna mia! A hotel! I thought, I’m safe!
Mollie: I’m sorry; I fear the only free room we have left is very small. I’ve just opened
today and I’m not prepared for any unexpected guests.
Mrs. Boyle: That’s quite obvious…
Paravicini: Oh, never mind, I’ve only brought this small suitcase with me; as long as I
have a warm bed to sleep in tonight, it’s enough.
Mollie: Ok, I will get your room ready; I’m not expecting anyone else to arrive; including
you, we are already six in the hotel.
Paravicini: Yes, I am the surprise visit! (With an evil laugh)

Christopher: (Looking out of the windows enthusiastically) Look, look, look, look! A
man is approaching the hotel skiing. How exciting! Mollieeee!!!

Right at that moment, the man skiing bumps against the windows. The bell rings
and Mollie comes to open the door.
Trotter enters.

Trotter: How do you do? Are you Miss. Ralston?

Mollie: Yes, did you hurt yourself?
Trotter: I’m Sergeant Trotter, from the London Police, Scotland Yard. (Christopher and
Ms. Casewell react with surprise)
Ms. Casewell: Any troubles with the law? I hope you are not selling alcohol without a
license!
Trotter: No, it has nothing to do with that. Where can I put the skis?
Mollie: I will take them down to the cellar.
Christopher: Don’t worry Mollie; I will take care of that. (Christopher takes the skis
and leaves)
Mollie: Well, then. What is it?
Trotter: The issue that brings me here directly affects your own security.
Excuse me Ms….
Ms. Casewell: Casewell.

insists on following him while Trotter goes “to inspect the house”. Meanwhile, Paravicini
starts playing the piano. Miss. Casewell and Mollie begin to discuss the past and reveal

(Com. Metcalf enters).

Com. Metcalf: Ms. Ralston, the telephone is not working.

Mollie: Half an hour ago it worked perfectly.
Com. Metcalf: I guess it is because of the snow.
Ms. Casewell: That’s just perfect! So now we are totally isolated.
Trotter: Ms. Ralston, Can I take a look at the house?
Mollie: Yes, of course.
Com. Metcalf: I’ll go with you.

(Com. Metcalf and Trotter leave. We hear someone playing the “Three Blind Mice”
song on the piano).

Mollie: What a horrible song!

Ms. Casewell: Who is playing it?
Mollie: Mr. Paravicini, he asked me earlier if I had a piano at the hotel.
Ms. Casewell: Did he tell you where he came from last night?
Mollie: Who, the piano?
Ms. Casewell: No darling, Mr. Paravicini. I think he is a parasite. He uses make up,
powders his face and I think he wears a wig. Sure he is an old pervert.
Mollie:In any case, whoever is playing that song, it sounds horrible.
Ms. Casewell: Don’t you like it? Perhaps it reminds you of a terrible childhood…
Mollie: I had a happy childhood… didn’t you?
Ms. Casewell: No, I didn’t. But we have to carry on and try to forget the past.
Mollie:Sometimes it’s hard to forget the past.
Ms. Casewell: I will not let anything from my past affect my present.

(Trotter and Metcalf enter).

Trotter: Well, upstairs everything is in order. Nothing suspicious except for the telephone
being cut off, because you received the police commissioner’s phone call, didn’t you?
Mollie:Yes, of course, I guess the line got cut by the snow storm.
Trotter: (Takes Mollie to the front stage to have a private conversation with her) Or
maybe someone cut the line on purpose.
