PROJECT TITLE: ECONOMIZAR

ABSTRACT;

In this paper, a literature review of low carbon practices was

done on Japan. Japan uses artificial intelligence, develops
batteries with high storage capacity and establishes cool biz
campaign to reduce carbon emission. A study was then
conducted using questionnaires to investigate the usage of air-
conditioners in Taman Tasek. All the residents use their air-
conditioners on a daily basis for a minimum of 1 hour. As a
solution to the problem, we propose a Wifi-based application,
Economizar as it helps to reduce carbon emission by allowing
users to switch off their air-conditioners conveniently and
remotely within the whole house.

PROBLEM STATEMENT;

As a consequence of global warming, people become very

dependent on air-conditioners as a way to cool themselves in
hot weather. This happens in the residential area of Taman
Tasek too. It is found that all the residents there use their air-
conditioners on a daily basis for a minimum of 1 hour. The main
negative effect is that more carbon will be released into the
atmosphere. Other than that, air-conditioners releases
Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) which is hazardous to our earth.

DATA COLLECTION;

We collected the data by using questionnaires. The

questionnaires were distributed to 30 residents in Taman Tasek,
Johor Bahru on 13th and 14th July 2018. We waited for the
residents to fill up the questionnaires and collected them back
on the spot.
Our questionnaire sheet consisted of 5 questions. The
questions were designed to serve several specific purposes.
The first question looked into the frequency of air-conditioner
usage among the residents of Taman Tasek. The 2 nd question
asked about the number of air-conditioners owned by every
household. The 3rd question intended to survey for how long the
residents used their air-conditioners on a regular basis. The 4 th
question aimed to see the choice of temperature when the air-
conditioners were in use. The last question was to find out
whether the residents’ air-conditioners were energy-saving.

PROPOSED SOLUTION;

The name of our product is called Economizar which

means “save money” in the Portuguese language . It is a Wifi-
based application that helps users to save money by
decreasing their electricity bills. Economizar also contributes to
a better environment by reducing the amount of carbon and
chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) that are being released into the
atmosphere.

Firstly, users install the application Economizar in their

mobile phones. Next, they have to connect the application with
their house Wifi. After that, they can start controlling the
switch, temperature and timer of all air-conditioners in the
house at their fingertips.

The application can improve user experience as people

bring their mobile phones with them almost all the time. For
example, if a user plans to switch off an air-conditioner in the
master room at 9.00 p.m. but he forgets about it and has gone
down to the living room, he can take out his phone and switch
off the air-conditioner immediately. He does not have to go
through the hassles of going upstairs which in most cases,
people do not like and tend to just leave things as they are.
RESULTS AND ANALYSIS;

Analysis:
- Double storey houses use more air-conditioners than
single storey houses. Bungalows use the most air-
conditioners.
- All bungalow households have 4-8 air conditioners each.
They use the air-conditioners for a maximum of 4 or 5
hours a day.
- All double storey households have 3-5 air conditioners
each. They use the air-conditioners for a maximum of 3
hours a day.
- All single storey households have 1-3 air conditioners
each. They use their air-conditioners for a maximum of 2
hours a day.

Why?
-The bungalows in Taman Tasek use the most air-conditioners as
they are bigger and consist of more rooms.

Discussion:
- With more air-conditioning used, more electricity is
consumed and will result in more serious global warming.
Then, even more air-conditioners will be used by not only
the bungalow houses but also the single and double storey
houses.
- It is a vicious cycle that needs help.
