TENSILE STRENGTH OF HARDEN

CONCRETE

Objective:
To calculate the tensile strength of the cylinder.

Introduction :

Cracking occur when contractions due to chemical

activity, drying, shrinkage, or a decrease in
temperature are restrained direct tensile test are
seldom used, but splitting tensile strength is
determined by applying increasing compressive load
on cylinder placed on their sides and compressed
until splitting occur. Tensile strength is then
calculated from the maximum load and the known
dimension.

ASTM Designation : C 496 –71

Apparatus :
• Testing machine.
• Compacting bar.
• Bearing strips.
• Cylinder mould (15 diameter &30 height).

Discussion and conclusion :

We know now that the splitting strength is much less

than the compressive strength for the same concrete
sample.
And the tensile strength is calculated from the
maximum load and the known dimension, when we
apply the load continuously and without shock, at a
constant rate with in range 100-200 PSI splitting
tensile stress until failure of the specimen.
