The Culture, Traditions, and Heritage of Jamaica
Jamaican culture signifies a rich combination of various traditions that have
settled the island and the first Taino settlers. English is the official national
language broadly added with local languages and Elizabethan usage. The main
local language is Jamaican Creole. Christianity is the major and considerable
religion of Jamaicans. In spite of this, there are other religions noticed and
practiced in the country such as Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism. A spicy, rich
combination of cuisine includes banana fritters; curried goat; jerk chicken, fish
and pork; pepper pot soup; rice and peas; salads and fruits.

Negril Beach, SourcePopular sports in Jamaica are Football, Cricket, athletics

and horse-racing. There is a significant amount of golf courses in the country.
Crafts are influenced by Indian, European, African, and Arawak cultures.
Jamaican paintings highlight bright colors and bold lines. Manufacturers of clay,
fabric, shell, straw, wood and semi-valuable stone are on display outside markets
and small galleries.

The musical types that originated in Jamaica are dub, mento, reggae, rocksteady,
ska, and lately, dancehall and ragga. The country also played a significant role
on the improvement of punk rock, in reggae and ska. Reggae has the effect of
American rap music, as they both contribute their roots as melodic, African way
of music. Some of the internationally recognized artists born in the country are
Beres Hammond, Beenie Man, Big Youth, Bounty Killer, Bunny Wailer, Dennis
Brown, Desmond Dekker, Grace Jones, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Peter Tosh, Shaggy
and Supercat. And the recognized band artist groups are Black Uhuru, Chalice
Reggae Band, Fab Five,, Inner Circle, Morgan Heritage and Third World Band.
One of the most popular films that showcase the beauty and culture of the country
is Cocktail, an American film that starred Tom Cruise.
Food, eating habits and cusine of Jamaica
Cooking in Jamaica contains flavors, spices and techniques. It has its own typical
and very unique qualities. Jamaican cuisine is a mixture of African, American,
British, Chinese and Indian cuisines. Nowadays, dishes which are clearly
distinguished as Jamaican menu include ackee and salt fish (the national dish of
Jamaica), curry goat, fried dumplings, fried plantain, "jerk" and steamed cabbage.
Some famous soup in Jamaica are Beef Soup, Cream Of Pumpkin Soup, Fish
Tea/Soup, Manish Water, Pepperpot Soup and Red Peas Soup. The main course
is typically fish or chicken, although beef, goat meat and pork are also common.
Escovitch fish is a common dish which boiled in coconut milk and served with
onions and peppers. Rice and peas (rice stewed with coconut milk and beans) is
commonly accompanied by the main course. Other popular dishes in the country
are Callaloo and Saltfish, Coconut Rundown, Corned Beef and Cabbage,
Jamaican spiced bun, Okra and saltfish stew, Oxtail and Stewed Peas.
Jamaicans like local tropical fruits as snacks and desserts. The popular desserts
in the country are Mango and sour sop ice Cream. Ice cream in Jamaica is usually
prepared with coconut milk, instead of cream or milk. The well-liked ice cream
flavors of Jamaican are grape nut and rum & raisin. Other desserts include
banana fritters, coconut drops, dookoonu, gizzada, toto, plantain tart and potato
pudding.
The country offers several beverages like carrot juice, cherry drink, ginger beer,
mango lada, mango smoothie and sour sop drink. But the most popular drink in
the island is tea.

In Jamaica, the quadrille dress is made of cotton. It's called a bandana skirt. The skirt is
worn with a ruffled sleeve blouse and a matching head tie. The traditional dress is made
out of red and white cotton plaid, maroon and white plaid, or madras.[1] The plaid
material is called bandana fabric. Men wear a shirt made out of the same fabric and white
pants during quadrille and folk dances.[2] However, for weddings, the traditional male
attire is a bush jacket made of linen fabric and black dress pants [3] or a tuxedo and the
female attire is a white wedding dress. In many countries, the bush jacket is known as a
guayabera.[4] In Africa, the bush jacket is known as a safari shirt and is worn in the same
manner as the safari jacket.
The quadrille is only danced in Jamaica and Trinidad today as a show. Dancers will
usually wear the Jamaican folk costume, which consist of a gathered skirt of red madras
bandana worn with a white peasant blouse. A matching head scarf is often worn tied in
a sort of turban fashion. This costume is unlikely to be "bespoke" as it is only worn as a
costume, for dancers, folk singers, tour guides etc. It represents the clothing worn by the
ordinary folk in roughly the eighteenth century. Sometimes beauty pageant contestants
wear creative evening dresses inspired by the national costume.
The bush jacket is hardly traditional. It was introduced for political reasons in the 1970s
and some men continue to wear it as a matter of taste. Traditional attire for weddings,
funerals, court dates etc. is an ordinary suit. Office attire is either a suit or shirt and tie.
The bush jacket is an option one sees occasionally.
One would not expect to see the folk costume at a wedding. The groom would wear a
conventional suit, the bride a fashionable white gown. Guests would wear suits and semi-
formal dresses. One or two of the men may wear bush jackets.
The only occasion where a man would wear a madras shirt and white trousers would be
if he were performing on the stage, either singing traditional folk songs or some sort of
calypso or mento in the tourist circuit.
