To The Student

World English Today (International Edition) has been designed for English L2 students at the
intermediate level and above. The primary goal of instruction is to teach communicative
competence; that is, to enable students to communicate effectively and naturally in English,
according to the situation, purpose, and roles of the participants through the use of a variety
of stimulating, challenging, and enjoyable activities. These activities are based on teaching
materials that have been created to meet the communicative needs of English second
language students and to fit the constraints of the typical 90-minute lessons that are found in
many programs throughout the world.

There are three main goals to the instruction provided in World English Today. Firstly, although
many students have an extensive passive knowledge of English, they often have considerable
difficulty applying what they know to actual communicative settings. A primary objective of
these teaching materials is thus to activate this passive knowledge by creating a
framework for participation and learning in which students have a great many opportunities to
communicate with each other and with their teacher in "real-life" situations in English.
Secondly, the instruction offered in World English Today emphasizes the importance of social
skills in English, which will enable students to communicate effectively and naturally with
others. Thirdly, this book is designed to create a communicative foundation that will permit
students to pursue their studies in English at more advanced levels of instruction in the future.

Communication Course A
Communication Course A is based on important functions and notions in English, such as
expressing likes and dislikes, agreeing and disagreeing, asking for advice, and so forth.
Introductory lessons provide the foundation for all future instruction, focusing on social
English skills which involve the exchange of personal information, as well as important
factors in communication such as eye contact, the use of names, attitudes toward silence,
listener expressions, and so forth. Conversation control strategies such as asking for
repetition, clarification, and verification are introduced and emphasized throughout the book.

Communication Course B
Communication Course B is designed to build on the communicative skills that students
develop in Communication Course A. It has a similar organizational structure, as well as many
of the same objectives and coursework requirements for participants. Instead of focusing on
functions and notions, however, lessons are based on topics and situations that students will
encounter in real-life communication in English, including areas of interest such as education,
work, housing, nightlife, and so forth. In addition, there is an emphasis on communicative
strategies that will enhance students' vocabulary development in the target language during
their discussions of the topics and situations presented in this course.

ii
Key Language Charts
The Key Language Charts, which can be found between the two Communication Courses, have
been included primarily for reference purposes and contain examples of expressions that
students will need to function effectively in English. The charts both review expressions
provided in lesson material and introduce a variety of new expressions.

World English Today is based on an approach to language instruction called Communicative

Language Teaching. CLT is an approach, not a method. It has no single text or authority and
there is no single linguistic model on which it is based. There are many different versions of
communicative approaches, but they are all based on the view that the functions of language
(i.e., what it is used for) should be emphasized rather than the forms of the language (i.e., the
grammatical structures).

World English Today also stresses task-based learning, which places "the task" at the center of
the methodological focus of all lessons. The learning process itself is viewed as a set of
communicative interactions that are directly linked to the curricular objectives they serve. The
goal of task-based instruction is to provide for the authentic use of language for meaningful
communicative purposes beyond the language classroom.

Typically, communicative, interactive, task-based language learning also emphasizes certain

specific instructional techniques which involve group or pair work and make use of information-
sharing activities, problem-solving tasks, and opinion exchanges. Information sharing activities
include a wide variety of techniques in which the objective is to convey or request information.
The two focal characteristics of information-sharing techniques are (1) their primary attention
to information and not to language forms, and (2) the necessity of communicative interaction
in order to achieve objectives.

World English Today thus offers students a language learning experience that is, above all,
communicative in approach. Moreover, the contents of this book are very much in accordance
with current approaches to English L2 education, which stress the need to prepare young
people to cope with life in an internationalized world, as well as the need to develop their
communicative competence along both linguistic and cultural dimensions.

Conversation guidelines

A+ Answers
Sometimes people only give "yes" or "no" answers to questions and do not provide any
further details. It is better to give more complete answers and add as many details as
possible, as shown in the A+ answers to the following questions:

Question: What kind of sports do you like?

(1) answer the question —> I enjoy playing tennis.
(2) add a fact —> As a matter of fact, I play two or three times a week.
(3) give an opinion —> I think it's one of the best sports for staying healthy.
(4) ask a question back —> How about you? What's your favorite sport?

Question? How often do you buy new clothes?

(1) answer the question
(2) add a fact
(3) give an opinion
(4) ask a question back

Asking for Repetition and Clarification

When you do not understand something in a conversation, it is important to ask the
other person to repeat or clarify (i.e., make clear) what was said. The following are some
expressions that are useful in asking for repetition and clarification in English:

Pardon me? I'm sorry, I don't understand.

Excuse me? I'm sorry, I didn't catch that.

Could you repeat that, please? Could you repeat that more slowly, please?
Would you mind repeating that, please? Could you explain that, please?

What does [xxxxx] mean?

Question? Where does your family live?

(1) answer the question
(2) add a fact
(3) give an opinion
(4) ask a question back

5
Listener Expressions [showing attention and interest]
Listener expressions are used to show that you are paying attention, understand, and are
interested in what is being said. The proper use of these expressions will make you appear
more natural when speaking English:

I see. Really?
Uh huh. Oh.
That's interesting. Hmmm.
Is that right? No kidding.

Filler Expressions [what to say when you are thinking of a reply]

If you need time to think of an answer to a question, say something that indicates that you
have understood the question. Avoid silence!

Hmmm… Well…
Let me see. Let me think.
That's an interesting question. That's a difficult question.

Question? How long does it take you to get to school?

(1) answer the question
(2) add a fact
(3) give an opinion
(4) ask a question back

Pair-Work Language
Pair-work exercises are often done in communicative language classes, during which time
you should always try to speak to your partner in English. The following are useful pair-work
expressions that will help you:

Would you like to start? Let's change. It's your turn.

Shall I start? Let's switch.

Question? Where do you like to go window shopping?

(1) answer the question
(2) add a fact
(3) give an opinion
(4) ask a question back

A HOLIDAY IN YOUR COUNTRY

A friend from overseas is planning to come to your country for a two-

week holiday. She hasn't been to your country before and has a lot of
questions. Give her some advice and suggestions.

When is the best season to visit your country?

What cities or towns should I visit?

What do you recommend that I do there?

What should I eat and drink in there?

If you were me, what would you bring to your country?

Make a list of the places, activities, and events that are famous in
your hometown and the surrounding area, including museums, parks,
gardens, popular shopping areas, restaurants, buildings, historic sites,
theaters, and any other interesting attractions for visitors.

MY HOMETOWN:

With your partner, create a role play in which you give them advice
and suggestions about what to do when they visit your hometown.
