10.centrifugal Pump & Pumps in Series - Set 2
Objective:
The purpose of this experiment is :
1. To study the performance of a centrifugal pump .
2. To study the performance of pump in series .
Apparatus:
The centrifugal pump consists basically of three components :
1. An inlet duct .
2. An impeller.
3. Volute.
- Tow geomertrically similar pumps of different sizes are available.
- The flow rate is measured by flow-meter.
- Pressures at various points may be measured by pressure gauges.
- Digital tachometers read the relative speed in rpm.
Theory :
The inlet duct conducts the fluid into the center of the impller.
Due to the impller rotation , the fluid is centrifugal out wards towards the
outside diameter of the impeller .The high velocity of the fluid at the out side
diameter of the impeller is converted into pressure energy by velocity
reduction in the volute.The high pressure fluid then passes through the pump
discharge to the system .For pumps operating in series the same flow rate
passes from the discharge of the first pump to the eye of the second impeller,
thus the head produced is equal to the sum of thew heads produced by each
pump.
The power input of the pump = W = ω x T = ( 2πN / 60) x ( arm x force )
= ( 2πN / 60) x ( 0.165 x F )
@ N = 2500 ---------------- W = 43.1969 F .
Power output = ρgQH
H = (ΔPre / ρg )
The overall efficiency З% = ( Power output / Power input ) = ( ρgQH / W ) =
(QΔPre./W )
In this report, we will test two pumps separately first. Then, we will
connect both pumps in series and study the performance of them.
Procedures :
Priming the pumps :
Before starting the pumps, they were primed as follow:
1. Fit a hose to larger pump priming connection, and pump case with
water by opening valve ( 2 ) .
2. Swiitch on the control cabnet for pump ( 1 ), variac knob to ( 0 ) .
3. Variac knob was moved slowly to about 50% rpm.
4. Valve (1) was opened fully and a pressure was recorder on gauges (
p2 ) & ( p3 ).
To prime pump ( 2 ) :
1. Pump ( 7 ) was opend pump ( 1 ) running slowly. Valve ( 3 ) was
opened slowly and air followed by water was pumped out .
2. When all the air was stopped being ejected valves ( 3 ) & ( 7 ) were
closed .
3. The control box for pump ( 2 ) was switched on .
4. The variac knob was moved slowly to 50% and valve ( 3 ) was opened
.
5. Valve ( 4 ) was opened slowly , and flow was registered on the flow
meter .
Measurements :
A.
1. close head valve ( Q = 0 ) .
2. Start the pump .
3. Set the speed at 2500 rpm.
B.
1. For pump ( 1 ) valves ( 1 ) & ( 2 ) were opened [controlling valve ] .
2. Q was varied .
3. P1 , P2 & Q were read .
C.
1. For pump ( 2 ) valves ( 3 ) & ( 4 ) were opened .[controlling valve ].
2. Q was varied .
3. Set the speed @2500 rpm .
4. P4 , P5 & Q were read .
D.
Results :
Pumps are used in many applications in civil engineering projects such as
water supply schemes, sewage & sewage disposal works also it used in
dames .
So one should know how it could useful for using pumps to resists
pressure head.
In order to reach the hight you are looking for , you can use several
pumps in series .
Sample of calculations :
Pump 1 :
ρg = 9810 Kg/m2.sec.
N = 2500 rpm
Q = 4.8 m3/sec.
P1 = - 0.27 Bar
P2 = 0.2 Bar
H = ( 0.2 – ( - 0.027 ))x105 / ( 9810 )) = 4.791 m
