9.axial Flow Pump - Set 2
9.axial Flow Pump - Set 2
Objective
To study the performance of an axial flow pump.
Apparatus
An axial flow pump has a high specific speed and is usually compact
in construction; it has three sets of blades.
1. A set of inlet guide blades ( omitted in the present apparatus but
approaching flow is axial).
2. The rotating propeller or rotor blades containing a limited number of
blades.
3. A set of outlet guide blades.
Procedure
1. The controls are set as follows:
a. Control cabinet-“Motor Generator” switched to “Motor”
b. Control valves-all open.
c. Control cabinet switch on.
2. Control knob is turned to required speed (2000 rpm ).
3. Outlet blade is set at angle 0°.
4. Totter blade is set at angle 30°
5. The lowest left-hand valve is adjusted for changing the discharge
pressure.
6. Pressures flow rate, and torque are recorded for various discharge
pressures for the given speed.
7. The control knob is turned to 2500 rpm.
8. Steps to 6 are repeated.
9. The control knob is turned to 3000 rpm.
10. Steps to 5 are repeated.

Conclusions
Pumps are one of the most important hydraulic applications in real
life. It is used to move liquids from low elevations to ones by giving the
liquid head enough. So it is important to know the characteristics of these
pumps compared to the one in lab.
Here we find head added, power input and output. Later we assume
this pump as a model of an original one with large dimensions by finding the
ratio between them, we could find our questions in field.
