Mrs. Jeffries thought Nigel Gibson was the ideal neighbour. He was a shy person, who
kept himself to himself, and he was always very polite. He was about fifty, with greying hair
and he had never married.

Nobody really knew what he did for a living. Whenever he was asked about his job, he
simply smiled and said that he worked for the government. He would get up early and leave
the flat at 8 o’clock, taking the underground to St. James’Park, then he got off and walked
the rest of the way to his office. As a rule he came back at about 6 PM, usually bringing home
some papers to work on in the evening. He only went out once a month, and apart from that,
as far as Mrs. Jeffries could tell, he saw nobody socially.
