Modified Rules – Primary School

Ball
A kookaburra junior red softball should be used.

Uniform / equipment
1. Batsperson is to wear full protective equipment
- pads (2) on legs, batting gloves (2), protector
and helmet
2. Wicketkeeper – full protective gear
- pads (2), wicket keeping gloves, protector and helmet
3. Footwear – flat soled shoes or boots to be worn

Playing area
1. Length of pitch to be 17.68 metres (58 feet, i.e. 2 ‘creases’ off a full-length pitch) 

2. Ground size – a maximum of 45 metres from each centre stump, marked with cones or domes 

Note: bowling should be from one end only.
bowlers ‘run up’ should not exceed 10 metres. Fields
persons should be rotated after 3 or 4 overs

Team composition
A team may use up to 15 players in a match provided;
a. Only 11 may bat for the official innings 

b. Only 11 players are to be on the field at any one time 


Length of game
This will of course be determined by the time available. Suggest 1 hour should achieve a 10 over per
innings game.
Note: a match using ‘dual pitch’ conditions avoids the necessity of having to set a limit on the overs
to be bowled. See elsewhere for organisation of dual pitch cricket.

Modifications to rules:
1. Batting
A batsperson will retire at the conclusion of the over in which he/she reaches;
- 15–ina12overorlessmatch
- 20 – in a match of greater than 12 overs
Note: a ‘retired’ batsperson may return to the wicket in batting order when the last of the 11 players
has batted and ‘one of the pair’ has either been retired (as above), or been dismissed.

2. Bowling
Each bowler is restricted to;
- 2 overs–in a match of 12 overs or less
- 3 overs – in a match of more than 12 overs 

- 4 overs – dual pitch conditions match 

Note:
As over (6 deliveries) shall be a maximum of 8 deliveries if any wides or no balls are bowled.

3. Fielding
Players may be rotated on and off the field, provided only 11 players are on the field at any one
time.
Note 1: restricted area – no player may be in this area until the ball has been struck or strikes the
body of or the equipment of the batsperson or passes the stumps on the way to the wicketkeeper.

Note 2: on-side fielding restriction – a maximum of 5 players only may be on the ‘leg side’ with no
more than 2 players behind the square leg umpire.

4. Bowling deliveries
- Short pitched – any ball passing above shoulder height with the striker in his/her normal
stance 
shall be called ‘no ball’, regardless of whether a shot is attempted. 

- High full pitch – any balls, which passes or would have passed the batsperson ‘on the full’,
above waist height, when he/she is in normal stance, shall be deemed dangerous and called
‘no ball’ by either umpire. 

- Wide delivery – a ball which lands ‘off the hard wicket’ area, should immediately be called a
‘no ball’ and not called ‘wide’ even though it may pass the batsperson well out of reach. 

- No ball and wide ball run penalty – a penalty of ‘one run’ shall be added to the ‘team score’
irrespective of any other runs scored by the batspersons off a no ball or wide.
