DOMAIN F LITERATURE REVIEW 3

Abstract

This domain focuses on professional development and maintaining a bully-free, accepting

community. Many schools have been placing a lot of focus on both of these topics in recent

years. There are many schools that have weekly early release days, which allow teachers to

collaborate and participate in professional development training. Schools are also taking part in

anti-bullying campaigns, in order to better the experience of all students and the environment of

the school.

Domain F Overview

This domain focuses on Professional, Legal and Ethical Obligations as well as

Professional Growth. Teachers have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to bullying and

maintain a non-hostile classroom environment. Teachers follow guidelines when teaching

students with English learners, gifted students, and individuals with disabilities, including

implications for their placement in classrooms. Teachers are always learning and focusing on

professional growth. Candidates must “use reflection and feedback to formulate and prioritize

foals for increasing their subject matter knowledge and teaching effectiveness” (CTC CITE).

Zero Tolerance in the Classroom1

Bullying is the most common form of school based violence. “Given that bullying is a

multifaceted problem, school-based anti-bullying strategies ought to address multiple

components that contribute to the problem, including adjusting the school environment, training

school staff, involving parents, utilizing the peer group, and educating the entire student

population (Sherer, Y., 2007). These strategies have been added to classrooms, in attempt to

eliminate bullying and provide a safe environment for all students.

Bringing it to Life.

Creating a “Bully Free Zone” is a school-wide project. To allow all students to

participate, our school has a “Be A Friend” campaign each year. Students design posters that

promote friendliness/anti-bullying and they are hung around the school. An entire week is

designated and students are able to dress up each day, per the theme. This week is fun for all

students and allows each student to play a part in things happening at our school. As a teacher

and promoter of our anti-bully campaign, I love designing posters and dressing up with the

students each day. Doing these things show the students that I am in this with them, and that we

can overcome our challenges together.
