1.0 OBJECTIVE
This is general method statement and shall be used in bore pile testing to measure
settlement of pile when loaded with certain quantity and time.

2.0 SCOPE OF WORK

The preliminary instrumented maintained load testing of piles shall comprise the
controlled application of an axial load. It shall involve the vertical pile being tested in
compression (i.e. subjected to loads or forces in a direction such as would cause the pile
to penetrate further into the ground).

3.0 CONSTRUCTION OF THE PRELIMINARY TEST PILE

3.1 Notice of Construction

Notice shall be given to the Engineer for the construction of the preliminary pile which is
to be test-loaded.

3.2 Method of Construction

The preliminary pile for testing shall be constructed in a manner similar to that to be
adopted for the construction of the working piles and by the use of similar equipment and
materials. Testing will be done on piles at location(s) to be advised by the Engineer.

3.3 Supervision

The setting-up of pile testing equipment shall be carried out under competent supervision
and the equipment shall be checked to ensure that the setting-up is satisfactory before the
commencement of load application. The dial gauges and pressure gauge shall be
calibrated before commencement. The calibration certificates shall be made available at
site for cross checking.

All tests shall be carried out only under the direction of an experienced and competent
supervisor who shall be conversant with the test equipment and test procedure. All
personnel operating the test equipment shall have been properly trained.

Erection and dismantling of the pile test reaction system and the application of load shall
be carried out in accordance with requirements of the various statutory

4.0 PLANT & EQUIPMENT

The survey level, hydraulic jack, pressure gauge, hydraulic jacks, pumps, hoses, pipe and
coupling, kentledge beam and supporting structures.

5.0 WORK METHODOLOGY

5.1 Kentledge

The Kentledge reaction system consists of hydraulic jack sitting on the top of the pile
head. Upon testing, it is jacked against the main beams which carries a series of
secondary beams acted on by a set of concrete blocks, H-section steel beams or
combination of both. The weight of the concrete blocks should be arranged in a system
aligned with the centre of gravity of the test pile as close as possible. The total dead load
shall be a least 10% higher than the maximum test load.

The pile head of the test pile shall be cast above ground level, it has to provide a
horizontal platform so as to receive the test load evenly. The ground surface on which the
kentledge legs will be seated on shall be laid with steel plates as to ensure even
distribution of load to the ground so as to minimize differential settlement due to soft
ground condition, if any. A general layout of the Kentledge system is to be sketched and
submitted.

5.2 Testing Equipment

All the test equipment such as the survey level, hydraulic jack and pressure gauge are to
be in good condition.

The settlement of the test pile shall be measured by 4 nos. of dial gauges and
counter-checked with an optical survey level.

The average settlement of the pile is taken from the average of 4 nos. of dial gauges. The
dial gauges are placed equally at the sides of the test pile and fixed firmly on the
reference frame by means of welding or by using a magnetic base.

A scale rule is secured firmly on the pile head or the side of the hydraulic jack, as another
mean to measure the pile settlement. Two external scale rules, will be erected on the
ground. These two bench marks are usually set up at locations perpendicular to the
levelling instrument. The survey level is to be secured firmly on the ground.

Ensure the hydraulic jacks, pumps, hoses, pipe, coupling and other apparatus used in the
test to be operated under hydraulic pressure are without leaking.

The maximum test load express as a reading on the gauges in use shall be displayed and
all operators shall be made aware of this limit.

5.3 Pile Head Preparation

The pile head or cap shall be formed to give a plane surface which is normal to the axis of
the pile, sufficiently large to accommodate the loading and settlement measuring
equipment and adequately reinforced or protected to prevent damage from the
concentrated application
tion of load from the loading equipment.

Pilecap, if used, shall be concentric with the test pile; the joint between the cap and the
pile shall have a strength equivalent to that of the pile.

5.4 Measuring Pile Head Movement

Movement of pile head shall be measured by dial gauges fixed on an independent

reference beam. The referenc
referencee beam shall be set up to enable measurement of the
movement of the pile to be made to the required accuracy. The supports for the reference
beams shall be founded in such a manner and at such a distance from the test pile and
reaction system that movement
movementss of the ground do not cause movement of the reference
beams which will affect the accuracy of the test.

Four dial gauges with graduation of 0.01mm will be clamped on the reference beam and
fixed to the base plate. Each dial gauge is set to 5.00 mm and the foot bears on plate glass
glued to the base plate.

An optical leveling method by reference to a remote datum will be used. Where a level
and staff are used, the level and scale of the staff shall be chosen to enable readings to be
made to with an accuracy of 0.5mm. A scale attached to the reference frame may be used
instead of a leveling staff. At least two reliable datum independent datum points shall be
established. Each datum point shall be so situated as to permit a single setting up position
of the level for all readings.

No datum point shall be located where it can be affected by the test loading or other
operation at the site.

5.5 Instrumentation of Test Pile

The aim to instrumenting the bored pile with strain gauges is to determine the load
distribution characteristic along the pile shaft.

The vibrating wire type strain gauge works on the principle that the natural frequency of a
wire changes as its length changes. Thus, by measuring the change in frequency, the
deformation can be obtained, and hence the strain. From the strain, the stress can be
calculated, and thus the load distribution along the pile shaft is known if the strain gauges
are installed at interval long the pile length.

A specialist tester will be appointed to carry out the instrumentation and monitoring of the
test pile. Strain gauges and extensometer will be installed inside the test pile, and
displacement transducer readings logged automatically using a data logger. Load cell
reading are read manually using digital strainmeter

5.6 Protection of Test Equipment

5.6.1 Protection from Weather

Throughout the test period all equipment for measuring load and movement
shall be protected from adverse effects of sun, wind and precipitation.

5.6.2 Prevention of Disturbance

Construction activities and persons who are not involved in the testing
process shall keep at a sufficient distance from the test to avoid disturbance
to the measuring apparatus. Full records shall be kept of any intermittent
unavoidable activity audits effects.

5.7 Notice of Test

Sufficient notice shall be given to the Engineer regarding the commencement of the test.
No load shall be applied to the test pile before the commencement of the specific test
procedure.

5.8 Test Procedure

The test will be conducted in 2 cycles. In the 1st cycle, the pile will be loaded stage by
stage to the working load (i.e. 1270 tons) and maintained for 6 hours or as instructed by
the Engineer. Then, it will be released stage by stage to zero loading and maintained for 3
hours or as instructed.

In the second cycle, the pile will be loaded in stages to 2.0 times working load (i.e. 2540
tons) and maintained for 24 hours or as instructed by the Engineer. Then, the load will be
released stage by stage to zero loading and the residual settlement is taken after 6 hours or
as instructed.

A loading sequence table shall be submitted prior to the load test, and upon approval shall
be displayed prominently at the test site during the test. Following each application of an
increment of load, the load shall be maintained at specific period as shown in the table,
unless rate of settlement is less than 0.25mm/hour and slowing down. The rate of
settlement shall be calculated from the slope of the line obtained by plotting values of
settlement versus time and drawings smooth curve through the points.
