TUGASAN ANDA (20%)
Mini Case
WE ARE DIFFERENT BUT YET WORKING TOGETHER
There are five staffs in a Sales and Marketing Department of Excellent Organisation
Bhd, Putrajaya, Selangor. Mr. Nagasaki, who is a 54 years old, is a Japanese man,
from Tokyo, who are the manager for the department. He has four staffs reporting to
him; Doris, 23 years, is a Chinese lady from China. Peter, 30 years, is an English man
from England. Mala, 40 years, is an Indian lady from India, and Salmah is a 21 years
old, Malay lady from Malaysia.
Today is the third day of Mr. Nagasaki working in the Excellent Organisation Bhd. He
has never worked in Malaysia and this is his first encounters with his staffs. Throughout
the day, his mind keeps wondering how the behaviour of this staffs are and how he
could bring them together to work for him. At 4.00 pm, the idea of having a meeting
strikes his mind. “I will call for a meeting tomorrow.” He quickly sat down and write an
email to them.
In the next working day, the meeting is supposed to begin at 9.00 am. However, in the
meeting room, there are only two persons; Peter and Mala. The watch shows 9.05 am
and Mr. Nagasaki kicked off the meeting by asking Peter “Where the other two staff
are; Doris and Salmah?” Peter replied, “I do not know.”
The meeting went on and on. Suddenly at 10.00 am, the door opened and Salmah
and Doris walked in quickly and seated themselves at the corner of the meeting room.
Mr. Nagasaki asked them “Why are you late? Don’t you know the meeting started at
9.00 am?” Doris replied that she did not opened her email till she received a what’s
app message from Peter, said there is a meeting this morning at 9.00 am. And,
amazingly Salmah said, “It is okay to be late because our Malaysian culture said so.”
Mr. Nagasaki is quite surprised with both answers.
During the meeting, he realized that Peter always has his opinion about something
and the rest of the team will follow his idea. There are times that Salmah has a different
view than the rest but she has to conform to the group’s decision. He ended the
meeting at 11 am.
Standing by the glass window, in his office and overseeing the lake, he thinks.
“Why can’t his staff be as punctual as his staff in Tokyo?”
“Why is my email ineffective?”
” Why does Peter dominating the discussion and the rest follow his stand?”
“How do I manage the diversity in my team?”
QUESTIONS:
1. Is diversity of people in a team is good or bad? Please justify your answer.
2. Does communication style differs across age and culture? If you are Mr.
Nagasaki, what communication channel would you used to communicate with
your staffs?
3. What does it mean by group think? Please provide the example according to
this case. How do you overcome the issue of ‘group think’?
4. What do you suggest to Mr. Nagasaki to ensure team effectiveness?

(Hint: Must read articles/chapters about diversity, team, and communication)
