1. A rock element is subjected to a state of stress as shown in the schematic below. The
corresponding stress tensor for this case is [100 40]. Determine the shear and normal stresses

on a plane with a normal angled at 35° with respect to x-axis. Unit of shear and normal stresses
in the stress tensor is psi.

2. For the stress tensor given in problem #1, determine the principal directions and the associated
principal stresses.

3. Draw the Mohr’s circle for the stress state given in problem #1. Then, determine the principal
directions, principal stresses, maximum shear stress and the normal direction of the plane on
which the maximum shear stress occurs.
