    ENPE 495AD- Assignment #2

    Due on February 14th at 4:00 PM

    1. A sandstone rock sample shown in figure below is subjected to a tensile force in x direction
    equal to 2500 lbf.

    As a result, the rock sample elongates by 0.0025 in. and contracts in y and z directions equally by
    0.0003 in. Determine the following:
    a) Stress and strain tensors
    b) Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio for this rock
    c) The change in volume of the rock sample, ΔV

    2. For the rock sample given in the problem above, calculate the hydrostatic stress required to
    shrink its volume by 2%.
