Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

Engagement: By using PowerPoint to create an eBook, I give students a voice by allowing time for them to
respond to the questions that are asked before revealing the answer.
Representation: A PowerPoint can be displayed in multiple forms of media in the sense it can be online, or
printed out and turned into portable physical books. These books can be brought home for extra practice.
Action and Expression: By giving a brief moment of silence after each question, students have the ability to
show what they know before the answer is revealed. Additionally, after the PowerPoint would be taught in
my lesson, I would ask the students to draw the different animals they just learned about to show what
they’ve learned.

Lesson idea implementation:

The lesson will open with the teacher showing the eBook that is attached to the class while they sit on the
carpet. It will be a 30-minute-long lesson. Student engagement and involvement is encouraged as the book
asks questions. This will show the teacher where the students stand on their knowledge of zoo animals.

After listening to the eBook, students will draw and color a picture of their favorite zoo animal to assess
student learning. This will extend the student learning to a higher level because the students will have to
apply what they have just learned about. The lesson will be concluded after students have 15 minutes to draw
and color their pictures. The pictures will be collected and hung on the wall for display in order to show
positive feedback on the drawings. Technology can be incorporated into the lesson as well as there are many
drawing apps that can be used on an iPad for the students to draw their zoo animals.

Reflective Practice: This lesson could impact student learning as it provides an engaging and fun way to learn
about zoo animals. To further extend the lesson we could go into more detail about zoo animals, such as what
they eat, what their habitats are like, and all the different colors and patterns they have on them such as
spots and stripes. There are several types of technologies other than apps, or PowerPoint, that could even

further enhance this lesson idea. For example, Unite for Literacy is an online eBook learning website that has
books with pictures on all different kinds of topics. These topics are for different grade levels too, many that
focus on animals.
