events celebrated.

b. Columbus Day
c. Independence Day
d. Labor Day
e. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
f. Memorial Day
g. New Year’s Day
h. Presidents Day (George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and the current president)
i. Thanksgiving Day
j. Veterans Day
Lesson idea implementation: To start my lesson I will have my students tell me about their favorite holidays. I
will then talk to them about the major holidays that are celebrated in the U.S. After our discussion, I will pull
up the timeline tool on the smart board. I will have students call out some major holidays. I will create the
timeline for everyone to see with the dates below. When creating the timeline, I will put the holidays in a
random order and have students come up and move around the holidays in chronological order (with my help
if needed). I will then assign each person a different holiday to write about on the iPads via Microsoft Word. I
will have them write about what they do on that holiday and why it is important. I will print each entry the
students wrote and have them draw a picture about. I will then create a book with all of the students work.

Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)
The book will go in chronological order and I will put the book in the reading center so students can read each
other’s work.
Reflective Practice: To further extend this lesson I could add in holidays that are celebrated in different
cultures. I could also post the book online for all my students to view, and use to study at home. I could also
create their own timeline so they have a better understanding of how timelines work.
