Museo Ng Maynila, South Bld.; It's been closed about a year ago I was told by a
man living next door. He has the key to the place and let me in so I could visit a
few rooms. Some of them were really gorgeous although most of it is in a rather
dreadful state. It must have been quite an impressive and charming building in the
past. Hopefully it will be renovated soon!!

Quezon City: The campus mentioned in the Quezon section should be the
University of the Philippines Diliman, not the University of the Philippines Manila.
UP Manila is on Padre Faura St. in the Ermita district while UP Diliman is in

When I was in the Philippines in Manila I booked a room at the Great Eastern
Hotel because the Lonely Planet listed it as having Wi-Fi. Wi-fi was only actually
available in the lobby, and was non-functional. I changed hotels, but was irked by
the inaccuracy.

Getting there and away/Air/Domestic: Air Philippines has been phased back in and
renamed Airphil Express. This just happened last week, and it *looks* like Airphil

company for now is saying that PAL Express will remain distinct from the new
Airphil Express, even though their websites have already merged.

Nov 10, Guggi Pack and David Koos,
We visited the Mt Pinatubo (santa juliana) end of september 2010. The trip
(described in the lp) to st juliana was relatively easy and uncomplicated. The
problem: we wanted to do a 2 day walk up to the top with an overnight at the crater
(as described in lp). Unfortunately this is not possible any more (at least in the
rainy period, we don't know exactly how it's like in other periods, no-one could
really tell us). The reason for this: last year 4 french tourists (or 2 germans and 2
french, information varied) wanted to drive and walk up there. The weather was
bad, a typhoon was close, so the guys from santa juliana told them, no-one would
do the trip with them. The tourists were mad, went to angeles and found 3 guides
there to do it. So the 7 people went up with a 4wd, heavy rain started, they wanted
to get to a save place and were all buried by a landslide and died. So the (very
good) consequence is, that no overnights are allowed and even daytrips are just
allowed when the weather is good and if they start before 9 a.m. Moreover only

I want to point out two conflicting statements regarding the birthplace of Jose
Rizal. On page 123 the book states that Calamba is his birthplace. Page 138 on
the other hand, talks of Lingayen Gulf and states that Pangasinan province is the
location of his birth. Calamba is southeast of Manila while Pagasinan province is
northwest of Manila and many miles from Calamba. His correct birthplace is
Calamba. Just thought you'd like to know.

Apr 10, Greg Bloom (Lonely Planet author),
Donsol Getting there and away: Information on getting to Donsol is inaccurate.
Minivans from Donsol stop running earlier than indicated (usually about 2pm or
3pm). Jeepneys from Donsol to Pilar also cut off around 3pm, so if you get
stranded after 3pm (as I did, largely because I relied on the information here),
you'll have to hire a motorbike to Pilar and then continue to Legaspi by jeepney or
bus (if you can find one). Change to: 'Direct air-con minivans and much slower
jeepneys to Legaspi run hourly until early afternoon - usually 2pm or earlier. If you
miss the last trip, jeepneys run until 3pm or so to Pilar, where you can connect with
frequent minivans and buses to Legaspi. After 3pm you may have to hire a
motorbike to Pilar (P100). The last van trip from Legaspi to Donsol is usually 4pm
or 5pm.'

202
Apr 10, Greg Bloom (Lonely Planet author),
There is no reliable price, duration or frequency info on the ferries between Matnog
and Allen (although there is a good tip to stay in Allen rather than Matnog).
'Frequent' isn't really accurate as they are pretty irregular and a few-hour wait is
not uncommon if you just show up. And there are both slow boats and fast boats
making the trip. This is the actual information: 'Ferries between Matnog and Allen
(P120, one to two hours) depart at least every couple of hours.'

Aninuan is not "a couple km" from White Beach. It's about 500m. Just walk around
the point, or drive a couple hundred metres west along the main road. It's true that
the centre of White Beach to the centre of Aninuan might be 2km, but technically
the distance between the east end of Aninuan and the west end of White Beach is
about 200m.

Mindoro Occidental: Sablayan. The advice in the book to go to the Siburan
Rainforest and the Libuao lake are not so easy to get to. The traveler must pick up
a permit for the visit (P50) first at the Eco tourism office, which will need to be
presented at the entrance gate of the FPPI prison area. The gate is about 20Km
from Sablayan. Best way is to take any of the buses going to San Jose and tell the
bus ticket vendor where you want to go so the bus will stop at the FPPI gate. At
the gate you may find a tricycle to take you all the way to the lake which is another
about 8Km. For P300 the tricycle will take you there, wait as long as you like and
take you back to the gate where buses pass about every hour. The idea to bring
lunch and water to the lake is excellent, there are nice sheds to rest and eat in the
shade while looking at the lotuses on the lake. We walked all around the lake (with
a guide) which was a nice exercise.

Eating/Uptown: The Food & Entertainment Area in the North Wing of the Ayala

dining area nearby, or moved to the mall proper.

243
May 09, JIM REVELL,
Cebu (Mactan) International Airport: On arrival it seemed that the Immigration and
Customs officers are rather more vigilant than they have sometimes been in the
past. As far as I could see every passenger from my flight was questioned at
Customs and perhaps 30% of passengers were requested to open their luggage
for inspection. Whether this new level of interest in arriving passengers was a “one-
off” I cannot say.

244
Apr 10, Greg Bloom (Lonely Planet author),
Corrections to Ferry List & Box: Carlos A Gothong Lines does cargo only on the
routes listed in the box on p 245 - it does NOT accept passengers and thus should
be deleted from the list. The following numbers are wrong: Super Shuttle Ferry
(should be 253 5733); Roble Shipping Lines (should be 232 2236); Palacio Lines
(should be 254 6629); Island Shipping (was not able to verify new number; simply
delete the old number); and George & Peter Lines. George & Peter lines does not
have any boats to Dumaguete, so correct that. And OceanJet has a very useful
daily ferry to Dapitan, Mindanao (P1250, 5.5 hours)

Feb 10, Phil Fawcett,
There are two Export Processing Zones, not one.

247
Feb 10, Phil Fawcett,
The map is misleading. There are only two municipalities on Mactan, Lapu Lapu
City (often still known by its old name of Opon) and Cordova. The other 'towns'
marked are barangays. This is important because barangay names are often
duplicated - for example there are barangays called Basak and Looc in both Lapu
Lapu City and Mandaue City, and anyone asking a taxi driver for Basak could end
up in completely the wrong place. The locations you mark as Lapu-Lapu and
Cordova are the town centres for those municipalities.

Feb 10, Phil Fawcett,
Cebu, Getting there and around. Tricycle drivers on Mactan island are not as
rapacious as claimed. I have only once paid 100 pesos and that was for a trip right
across the island. A typical fare for a special ride from Basak (in the middle of the
island) to the Pacific Cebu Resort (on the east coast) is 50 pesos. If the driver
asks for more, walk away. There is always another tricycle. That is why the traffic
jams are so bad! Also, there is a ferry which runs between the market and Cebu
Pier 3. This is undoubtedly the quickest (and one of the cheapest) ways to get to
downtown Cebu.

248
Feb 10, Phil Fawcett,
Something I have noticed in previous editions. The locals will not necessarily
understand the term Olango Island. It is usually called Santa Rosa, after the
capital.

249
Feb 10, Phil Fawcett,
Nalusuan Island Resort and Marine Sanctuary is a great place, but not quite the
bargain it seems. The headline prices, which appear in the guide and are quoted
on the Nalusuan Island web site, exclude both VAT and a resort service charge.
Together, these add a whopping 22% to the headline prices. Also, I am not sure
that the transfer is free. I was charged a special ride (2000 return) for the boat trip.

253
Apr 10, Greg Bloom (Lonely Planet author),
The last boat from Hagnaya to Santa Fe (Bantayan), as of April 2009, was
5.30pm, not 6.30pm. The last boat from Santa Fe to Hagnaya was 5pm, not
3.30pm.

257
Apr 10, Greg Bloom (Lonely Planet author),
Lilo-an & Santanderthe author has mixed up Lilo-An and Santander. The dive
centres and boat docks are BOTH in Lilo-an, not in the larger village of Santander.
So change text to: "A range of accommodation - mainly dive centres that cater to
package tourists - is available just east of the pier in Lilo-an, where both buses
from Cebu and boats from Negros disembark. If coming from Moalboal, buses will
drop you off in nearby Bato, which is a P30, 10-minute tricycle ride west of Lilo-an."

257
Apr 10, Greg Bloom (Lonely Planet author),
Lilo-An & Santander: The last graf of Lilo-An and Santander section has several
mistakes: 1) All boats from Santander to Sibulan actually depart from Lilo-an
(which is a barangay of Santander). There are both fastcraft (P60 from the public
pier) and bangka (P50 from a nearby private pier) making this trip throughout the
day (they alternate); 2) It's a 25-minute trip max, not a 40-minute trip; 3) There are
no Sunrays buses, only Ceres Bus Liner buses; 4) the trip to Cebu is 3.5 to 4
hours, not 6 hours.

From Moalboal to Kawasan Falls you can go by bus. You don't have to hop off on

I think your information on our chicken downplays it. Bacolod Chicken Inasal is the
main thing to eat in Manukan Country in Bacolod. We had our first Inasal festival

The info on getting to Sipalay from Dumaguete is dead wrong. 1) There is no air-
con bus on this route. 2) There is just one non-air-con (ordinary) bus (originating in
Cebu) that does the direct trip from Dumaguete to Sipalay, but it is slow, extremely
crowded and often arrives after dark in Sipalay, so is NOT recommended. 3) The
preferred route is to take any regular Ceres bus to Bayawan, then switch to
another bus to Hinoba-an, and then switch to a third bus to Sipalay. Connections
on all three routes are frequent. 4) Much of the route after Bayawan remains
unsealed and will not be sealed during the lifetime of this book barring new
funding.

this: "Getting to Apo cheaply is somewhat problematic. A couple of bangkas depart
the island for Malatapay, 18km south of Dumaguete, around 7am and return

it's 11km (45 minutes) over a windy, bumpy road to the resort (do not turn off the
road - go straight and follow the signs and you will get there easily).

Tagbilaran/Getting there and away/Bus - Buses to Panglao Island and Alona

Destinations include Dauis (P8, 10 minutes), Panglao town (P25, 40 minutes), and

Burgos to Maasin, nor from Padre Burgos to Ormoc (only jeepneys and infrequent

the southbound buses aboard your ferry. So I would change this to: "Southbound
buses and jeepneys to Calbayog and beyond depart from Allen's bus terminal, on
the road to Calbayog, until about 3pm. Vans heading south hang out at the ferry
dock but dry up in the early afternoon. If arriving in Allen any later than 2pm try

scheduled boats. Put this in there instead: 'During the December to May high
season, it's possible to be dropped off in Port Barton on the regular scheduled
boats between El Nido and Sabang. However, these boats are not allowed to pick
up passengers in Port Barton. If you want to leave Port Barton on one of these
regular scheduled boats, you can be picked up on nearby Cacnipa Island. It's also
easy to charter a boat on your own .... [the rest of this stays as is]

Dilis Beach Resort on Icadambanuan Island: the LP mentions incorrect prices in
the book. the correct prices are 1500 peso for the rooms in the house and 4000
peso for the cottages on the beach. The correct prices are also on their website.

Oct 09, ANN LOND-CAULK,
In Palawan you mention the flower Island Beach Resort. The price is US$60 per
person. This is now much more expensive US$135 per person in an aircon room.
You may wish to put this in the luxury category for your next edition.

Apr 10, Greg Bloom (Lonely Planet author),
Getting there and away/Boat: The information on El Nido - Coron ferries is not
accurate has to change. Here is the rewrite: 'The most important boat service for
visitors to northern Palawan is the El Nido - Coron connection. There's usually at
least one bangka every morning if weather permits, but that's a big if. These are
run by two separate operators who alternate trips, so if somebody tells you there
are no boats going on the day you want, ask somebody else. All boats are medium-
sized bangka boats, not much larger than those used for island-hopping around El
Nido. All trips cost P2200 and take seven to eight hours. Bring plenty of water,
breakfast, lunch and sunscreen. El Nido Boutique & Art Cafe (see p416) can
handle advance bookings. A cheaper option is the Atienza Shipping Lines (%0918
566 6786) cargo/passenger boat to Manila (40 hours). It leaves every Friday
evening at midnight and goes via Coron (P950, nine hours). The return trip departs
Coron at 10pm on Wednesday.'

Getting there and away/Boat: Based on corrections made earlier, this needs to
change to: 'During the high season, depending on the weather, there are boats
most days to Sabang (P2000, eight hours) with dropoffs, but not pick-ups, in Port
Barton (P1500, 31\2 hours). You can hire a bangka ... ' The rest stays the same,
although it seems to me like info has nothing to do with El Nido, so I would change
to: 'A private to Port Barton costs P6000/7500 for a six-person/eight-person boat.'

Aug 10, Ralph Balmer,
From El Nido to Coron, there are now daily connections via boat in both ways.
These connections even run in the low season as I experienced it travelling in
Palawan during all July 2010.
The Shedules are posted on different locals shops and are as follows:

From El Nido to Coron:

Jessabel: Tues / Fri / Sun: 07:30AM
Overvomer: Mon / Thur: 07:30 AM
Princess Welia: Wed / Sat: 07:30 AM

Costs for the trip are P 2.200 per person

Travel time depends on the boat. The Princes Welia is the newest and fastest boat
an makes the trip in 6 hours.
Jessabel and Overcomer make it in 8 hours.

From Coron to El Nido, the shedule is:

Jessabel: Mo / We / Sa: 08.00 AM
Overcomer: Tu / Fr: 08:00 AM
Princess Welia: Thur / Su: 08:00 AM

Normally, the boats never leave on time. waiting at least 1 hour is common.
From Coron to El Nido the boats leave from the Pier of the Seadive Resort which
makes it easy to wait as you can drink/breakfast and wait for the departure.

that they have three weekly flights to Cebu as well as the flights to Manila. Delete

Apr 10, Greg Bloom (Lonely Planet author),
The Sangat Island Reserve review has misinformation. There are NOT six wrecks
within 10 minutes; I've stayed there for several days and can vouch for this. There
is one that's about 20 minutes. Others are 35min to 45min. You can say that there
are 'several wrecks within a 45-minute boat ride'. Also, the resort itself is more
than a 30-minute boat ride from Coron. It's more like 45 minutes (in a speedboat, if
there is one; more in a bangka).

I was not informed that you only can stay 21 days for "free" in the Philippines. You
can stay longer, but then you have to pay up when you depart the country. I stayed
23 days and had to pay 3040 pesos. And again this is after check in, just before
the security check when they check your passport, so cash is needed here as well.

Airport - when departing from Manila (NAIA) be aware that there is a 750 pesos
airport fee that all passengers have to pay. This is after you check in you luggage
and there are no ATMs so you have to go all the way out again if you don't have
cash.
