Time
Process Components
(min.)
*Anticipatory Set
Students will discuss what determines a percussive instrument.
Answers will include drums, cymbals, maracas, xylophone, and boomwhackers.
We will transition from this to actually using the boomwhackers
*State the Objectives (grade-level terms)
1. Students will learn about pitches in the western-octave scale
2. Students will learn about boomwhackers
3. Students will play simple tunes with the boomwhackers
*Instructional Input or Procedure
1. After the introduction, boomwhackers will be passed out to all students. There
should be enough for a whole scale, along with the enharmonic sharps and flats.
2. Students will then make the C major scale (C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C) using the
boomwhackers, almost like a piano. Half-steps will be introduced, showing the sound
of them in between natural notes.
3. From there, the instruction will move forward to showing students how to use
boomwhackers.
a. Hold boomwhacker in hand where the hand is holding one end.
b. Hit the open end on the ground, controlled. You do not need a lot of force to
make sound from this instrument.

4. For a game, I will point at individual students, and they will play their note.
5. After showing them, we will identify who has what notes to play some of the songs
that they can follow through YouTube. We may need to split the class in half in order
for everyone to have a chance.
a. Pirates of the Carribean https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OaZaqyZKyI
b. In the Hall of the Mountain King

*Modeling
The teacher will model proper ways to use the boomwhacker.
The teacher will model how to read music as well.

*Check for Understanding

Checking their form in how they play the boomwhacker, along with recognizing what
note they have.

*Guided Practice
I will help them to play in the right times as they are following the music.

*Independent Practice
They will do so while playing through Pirates of the Carribean and in the Hall of the
Mountain King
Assessment
There will be no assessment for this lesson as it is primarily enrichment.

*Closure
They should have an introductory understanding of boomwhackers. As an exit ticket,
students will show the proper way to hold and use a boomwhacker.

Differentiation Strategies (enrichment, accommodations, remediation, or by learning style).

Everyone will be able to participate, so we will take turns as a group to play. I have SPED students in all of my
classes, and they WILL have the opportunity to play along side others.

Classroom Management Issues (optional)

MAKE SURE THERE IS ENOUGH BOOMWHACKERS
Lesson Critique. To be completed following the lesson. Did your students meet the objective(s)? What
part of the lesson would you change? Why?

One of the biggest things I forgot to think about, is regarding the time that is available for students. I would adjust
the amount of time things are presented and discovered in the class. One big thing I need to make sure of, is
having enough boomwhackers for all students. We were literally missing one of the boomwhackers, and it
changed the lesson a little bit. One final thing I would adjust, is the differentiation I need to have for larger groups.
