Vinci to build Nanterre HQ

A new head office for French contractor Vinci will be built at Groues, in Nanterre,

Signs of improvement
March proves to be a strong period for the majority, despite a few
decreases, while stock markets rise too. Joe Malone reports

F
ollowing a tricky start
to the year, there were
increases across the board
during March while stock markets
improved.
Most notably, the Dow was up
4.82% between weeks 8 and 12,
following a rise of 1.11% from
weeks 1 to 8 of 2015.
The FTSE 100 also rose 0.55% for
the same period.
The Japanese stock market
showed signs of recovery too
after a difficult start to the year,
as the Nikkei 225 rose 4.35% in
March.
This followed a fall of 8.53%
from weeks 1 to 8.
Construction shares proved
Meanwhile, the DAX Xetra al so
rose 4.06% after a 5.30% fall from
weeks 1 to 8.
The CAC 40 regained a small
amount of its value after a loss at
the beginning of the year, rising
0.76%.
Construction shares proved

for the whole industry rising
some 4.20%, after a marginal
drop at the beginning of the year.
As a result, there were gains
in the materials, contractors and
manufactures’ shares.

Relaunch can create
circular economy
Construction has a key role in this process, according to FIEC’s position
of the Circular Economy Action Plan that relaunched in December 2015

ollowing a false start in
2014, when the European
Commission announced
it was withdrawing its Circular
Economy Package from its
annual Work Programme 2015,
it kept its word and relaunched
the package as the Circular
Economy Action Plan in
December 2015 – a bit too late
for FIEC to react before the New
Year.
FIEC’s position paper was,
however, published in mid-
January.
Welcoming the proposals on
waste, standards for secondary
raw materials and reliable data,
FIEC vice president Kjetil Tonning
said, “We have always supported
the concept of the circular
economy and we support the
Action Plan, which should help to
address resistance in the market,
to use recycled and reused raw
materials.”
Commenting specifically on
the lack of demand, he added,
“The construction industry is
innovative and contractors
already propose the use of
secondary raw materials, but
clients have to agree to accept
them.”
Currently, some clients still
believe that “new is best” and
contractors are reluctant to offer
“green solutions” to a market that
is not ready.

on “end of waste”.
FIEC said it believed that this
will lead to the acceptance
– including in legal terms – of
relevant recovered materials as
secondary raw materials and not
waste.
Also, it went on to say that
it believed that the proposed
measures to improve, evaluate
and acknowledge the quality
of secondary raw materials
should go some way to ease the
concerns of clients.
There remains a strong
perception that recycled and
reused materials are inferior to
brand new materials.
However, addressing the
concerns about quality and, in
particular, introducing standards
for secondary raw materials
should reduce resistance in the
market.
Comparable and robust
indicators that do not create a
burden as a result of onerous
data collection and reporting
processes will build confidence
in the market.
FIEC feels that this data should
show that progress towards a
more circular economy is being
made.
MAJOR SHIFT
FIEC believes that the conditions
also have to be right for a major
shift in the way materials are
sourced and used.
In particular, sorting and
recycling facilities must be
available in close proximity to
construction sites.
These facilities must be able
to deal with large quantities
of potentially recyclable and
reusable building materials,
generated from building
renovation and demolition
projects.
In addition, the cost of
processing such materials should
not outweigh the environmental
benefits and care must be taken
to identify and dispose safely of
dangerous substances, to reduce
the risk to human health.
Before products even reach
contractors and long before
demolition takes place, material
producers can influence the
extent to which the circular
economy can work.
We expect them to manufacture
responsibly in future, aiming for
zero waste generated by their
products.
Of course there will always be
some waste, but small steps can
already be taken, for example to
ensure that packaging is reduced
to a minimum and that toxic
substances are eliminated totally
from new materials.
ALL ABOUT BIM
FIEC will hold its annual
conference in June, and the
theme of the conference will
be BIM (Building Information
Modelling).
BIM could significantly improve
building deconstruction in
terms of the environmental
impact and could ensure that
renovation and maintenance are
undertaken in a way that will
support the objectives of the
circular economy.
FIEC recently undertook a
survey of its member federations
to find out how widely BIM was
being used by contractors across
Europe.
The survey discovered that the
uptake is not widespread yet,
although some countries were
found to be far ahead of some of
the others.
BIM is being used mainly for
public and commercial buildings
and for larger projects.
Among several barriers to
uptake, the lack of awareness
remains the biggest hurdle, with
a lack of clear benefits also being
cited.

For the circular economy, at
least, there would appear to
be a clear benefit, and using
BIM could help contractors to
maximise their impact in this
regard.
Moreover, FIEC Member
Federations are expecting the
use of BIM to increase modestly
in the next two years and
significantly in the next five years.
So the outlook is promising for
BIM’s potential as a catalyst for
the circular economy.
Clearly, the Circular Economy
Action Plan needs a concerted
effort to ensure its effective
implementation.

was principally about the north-
south gap. While this difference
still remains, the most striking
aspect at the moment is the
desperate situation in the Russian
market vs a robust rest of Europe.
In fact, Europe without Russia
was among the top three
performing regions in the world
in 2015, behind only the Middle
East and India.
This contrasts with a clear loss
of momentum in North America,
where the market is almost back
to the peak levels of 2006, but
saw no further growth in 2015.
Latin America, Africa and most
parts of Asia – in particular China,
which saw the fourth consecutive
year of decline – suffered further
decreases.
IMMENSE RISKS
It remains extremely difficult to
forecast 2016, as there are still
immense risks on the table.
Most notable are a number of
political tensions and conflicts,
the unsolved Euro crisis (which
has escaped public attention
recently), and the weakness
of oil and gas prices, as well as
commodity prices in general.
In addition, problems continue
in emerging markets, and the
net economic effect of refugee
migration remains unclear.
It is a positive sign that the
overall business climate seems
to be less influenced by risks and
uncertainties recently.
The CECE Barometer, the most
relevant leading indicator for the
construction equipment industry
in Europe, grew significantly in
the last quarter of 2015 and the
first quarter of 2016.
The index is clearly in a positive
zone, which suggests a positive
first half of the year when it
comes to equipment sales.
Looking at the European market
in 2016, it seems most likely that
the recovery in Southern Europe
CECE
will continue – particularly
in Italy and Spain. Fuelled by
infrastructure investments,
Central and Eastern Europe
should continue its growth.
France could win back a portion
of what was lost in 2015.
The high volume markets
like Germany, the UK, Nordic
countries, Benelux, and Austria
and Switzerland are not expected
to see further growth, but a
slump is not expected either.
GROWTH ACCELERATION
Turkey has the potential to
accelerate growth further,
but political issues could limit
investment activity. A quick
pick up in the Russian market
is unlikely, even if the political
component of the crisis
disappears.
Overall, this translates into a
modest single-digit growth rate
as the most realistic scenario for
sales in Europe.
What remains true, though, is
that the European construction
equipment sector is an exporting
industry.
Even in a difficult market in
2015 with declining worldwide
sales, exports from Europe to the
world grew slightly – by 4% in the
first 10 months of the year, with
full-year results not available at
the time of writing.
The market will certainly not
benefit from countries that rely
on the mining and raw materials
sectors (Africa, Latin America),
and the low oil price will continue
to take its toll in the Middle East,
and most likely in North America
as well.

seems fairly unlikely over the next
twelve months.
In conclusion, across all
products and regions, flat

the most realistic forecast

vant Tecno’s new e5 fully-electric
battery-powered loader concept will
be on show at Bauma 2016, as well as
its new Avant 200 series.
The e5 is in the same size class as the Avant
500 series, offering zero emissions, extremely
low noise and low running costs, according to
the company.
The e5 is said to have approximately the
same technical capabilities as an Avant 500
series machine and it can run many of the
Avant attachments.
The Finnish company said that a battery-
operated machine was especially well
suited for indoor areas where no or very
little ventilation was possible. Its low noise
level enables work in noise restricted areas
or where minimum interference caused by
worksite noise is a benefit, said Avant.
Demolition and construction projects are
highlighted by Avant as being among the
potential customer base. It said that many
such customers needed a machine with a
relatively short working cycle during a work
day, and so the battery life was not such a big
issue for them.
The e5 is equipped with a 201Ah lead acid
battery. It has two separate electric motors
– 6kW motor for driving the machine and
2kW motor for loader boom operation and
auxiliary hydraulics. Avant e5 has a 30 litres/m
auxiliary hydraulics flow, which allows
working with various Avant attachments,
including a hydraulic hammer and various
grapples.
Meanwhile, production of a new Avant
200 series has started. It is described as a
compact multi-purpose loader that was
useful in places where space was limited and

wider and 60mm longer than their
predecessors, which Avant said

new chassis means more storage space for
tools, etc, and the fuel tank and battery are
larger than before.
The new Avant 200 series consists of three
models. Production of the Avant 220 – with
a 14.9kW petrol engine – and 225 – with an
18.6kW petrol engine – has begun. Later,
in about May, production will start on the
Avant 225LPG, which is equipped with a
low emission LPG engine. Avant said it was,
therefore, well suited for indoor refurbishing
and demolition jobs, where a low unladen
weight of the machine was essential.

wheeled excavator, called Hydradig, among
its machines on show at Bauma.
Hydradig is described as a digging, lifting,
loading and tool-carrying machine for urban
construction, highway maintenance and
municipal operations.
The company said it listened to its customers’
needs, and ensured that Hydradig would
deliver in five key areas – visibility, stability,
mobility, manoeuvrability and serviceability.
Operators have a 360° view from the cab,
with visibility right down to each of its four
wheels. The machine’s stability comes as a
result of its low centre of gravity, which is said
to allow stable lifting and faster travel speeds.
The Hydradig can reach speeds of 40km/h
when traveling between job sites, while an
all-wheel steer gives it urban usability.
Hydradig can also be serviced from
ground level, as the company said it wanted
to maximise the safety of operators when
servicing the machine.
Hydradig is equipped with three steering
modes as standard. These are: two-wheel
steering for security at road speeds, four-
wheel and crab steering. A front axle with 8°
of oscillation delivers rough terrain traction
and stability, it said.

80e, which has a redesigned bonnet. And
the manufacturer said its Weycor wheeled
loaders would also come fitted with a new
hydraulic start-stop system that it claimed
resulted in fuel savings of between 10% and
12%.
When the wheeled loader is at work and
is not being used or loaded for a specified
period, the engine switches off automatically.
If the driver touches the joystick, a pedal or
the steering wheel, or if he climbs back into
the machine, the engine starts immediately.
Atlas Maschinen will be showing several
new excavators to coincide with a number of
Tier 4 versions available from April onwards.
Developments include a number of
special features on the 140W small wheeled
excavator, such as the new Atlas quick
change system and a 2,750mm dozer blade
to increase operation speeds.
Meanwhile the 160W is equipped with an
all-new cab and interior, and features a new
sixth generation electronic control system.
The 180Wsr wheeled excavator is also being
shown in the new Tier 4 Final version. With
a TCD 4.1 Deutz diesel engine supplying
115kW, Atlas describes the excavator as a
“true powerhouse”.
Terex Compact said it would launch six
new mini excavators from 1.4 to 3.7 tonnes
– the TC14-2, TC16-2, TC19-2, TC22-2, TC35-2
and TC37-2 models, which it said would be
followed by other models over the next two
years.
The new minis are equipped with LUDV
hydraulics (load-independent flow
distribution), enabling power to be transferred
to the functions as the operator demands.
For the precise control of attachment tools
such as hammers or cutters, the second
auxiliary circuit is operated with electrically
proportional control, a standard feature
offered on TC22-2 and larger models, and
optional in the smaller models.
Terex Compact will present its new TA9SP
site dumper, alongside a new addition to its
2016 backhoe loader portfolio, the TLB830.
The TA9SP site dumper provides new swivel
tip functionality for a 9-tonne payload class
machine as well as including a new powershift
transmission, combined with auto-shift
technology. The model will also highlight a
patent pending stop-start technology feature.
The TLB830 backhoe loader has been
specifically designed with the rental
marketplace in mind. Featuring a Tier 4 Final-
compliant 56kW Deutz TCD 3.6 L4 engine
for Europe, and a Tier 3 Perkins 1104 T3
70kW variant for South America and the rest
of world, each model comes with synchro
transmission, air conditioning and servo
excavator controls as standard.
The TLB830 has been  engineered to excel
in digging, reaching, lifting and loading
applications, said Terex. The additional option
of bespoke accessory kits enables users to
customise their machine tuning specification
to meet exact application requirements.

said highlights on its stand would include
its latest two-wheeled loaders and its new
C50R-5 carrier model, as well as its B7-6 Sigma
excavators.
Yanmar said its Sigma concept and the
SV100 two-piece boom enabled quick and
precise operation in narrow spaces – an
advantage for road construction and work
in urban areas. The SV100 two-piece boom is
the first Yanmar excavator with an articulated
boom.
Among Ausa’s offerings will its range of
dumpers. It said five dumpers would be
presented, including its largest model – the
10 tonne capacity D1000 APG model.
Hinowa said it planned to launch a new
tracked mini dumper at the exhibition – the
HS701, powered by a Honda petrol engine.
It is available with either a 6.7kW manual
start engine or a 9.7kW electric start engine.
The HS701 has a 700kg load capacity but a
compact design, with a width of 758mm to
allow it to pass through narrow spaces.
Schäffer, meanwhile, said it would present
its new four-model range of compact
wheeled loaders with Z-Kinematics for higher
performance, lifting and breakaway forces at
the show, part of its 37kW to 75kW 24 Series.
It highlighted the SLT model in the 24 Series
in particular, is are less than 2m high for
low clearances, but still
boast the Z-Kinematics
high torque engines.
This machine has a
0.5m3 bucket capacity
and has been designed
for situations where
high performance in
tight space is needed.
Despite its low working
weight of 2.45 tonnes,
the 2436 SLT is said to be
able safely to transport
full stone pallets with a
weight of 1.6  tonnes –
even on rough terrain.
Schäffer said the required stability is achieved
by the articulating/swivelling joint that
ensures sufficient ground contact.
SDLG will come to this year’s Bauma with
an expanded product line, including new
launches and updates on existing models.
Among its Bauma debutants are the L948
wheeled loader, which has a 4 tonne rating
and is powered by a Yanmar SD60B Tier III
engine which drives a ZF 4WG158 automatic
transmission.
It has full hydraulic brakes and load-sensing
capabilities, plus a large and comfortable cab
which includes a reversing camera for safer
and more efficient site movements. Maximum
breakout force is 125kN and it has a standard
bucket capacity of 2.3m3.
Another new launch for SDLG is the E635F,
a 3.5 tonne-rated crawler excavator with a
standard bucket capacity of 0.11m3 and an
excavating force of 32kN. Power for the unit
comes from a Yanmar 4TNV88 engine and it
includes the manufacturer’s new E-series cab.
SDLG’s LG959F is an update to the LG958L,
a CE-certified wheeled loader which was
launched into Turkey last year. The LG959F
offers a maximum breakout force of 152kN
and can also be fitted with a 3.1m³ bucket for
optimum material handling. The LG959F on
show at Bauma will be similar to the model of
the same name that is sold in North America,
popular with general construction projects,
quarrying, agriculture and utility work. ce

U
S firm GOMACO is introducing its
3300 multi-application slipform paver
to the audience at Bauma, as well as its
new GP3 machine, which it calls “the world’s
most intelligent concrete paver for slipforming
widths up to 9.14m”.
Features on the 3300 include advanced
steering capabilities with Smart Leg and Track
Positioning, as well as a Smart Telescoping
Mold mounting system, which allows paving
from both sides of the machine.
The paver includes a U-shaped operator
platform, which is said to give an enhanced
view of the overall paving operation.
Along with a 6.1m conveyor – with four-way
hydraulic positioning which allows improved
placement of the concrete into the hopper on
either side of the paver – the control console
slides from side-to-side, depending on the
direction of the pour.
Hydraulic rotational devices on the tracks
– combined with GOMACO’s latest G+
technology – are said to aid the 3300’s steering
capabilities.
The paver can quickly change from one
mould profile to another, using GOMACO’s
Hook-and-Go mould mounting system. The
trimmerhead and mould also shift sideways
and adjust vertically, clearing obstacles and
allowing the 3300 to get much closer to them.

The dual-telescoping GP3 slipform paver
paves to a maximum width of 9.14m, and
is the first in a series of GOMACO pavers to
feature next generation technology.
It combines Smart Frame Widening,
allowing it to accommodate multiple width
changes, with Smart Leg Positioning and
Smart Steering, which are all controlled by the
GOMACO-exclusive G+ digital control system.
Weber MT said it would be showcasing its CR
2 soil reversible compactor, which replaces its
identically-named predecessor. The machine
a centrifugal force of 25kN and operating
weight of 143kg or 156kg depending on the
engine used.
Weber’s SRV 300 vibrating tamper will
also be on show – a model which has been
redesigned from the ground up to achieve a
low operating weight of 32kg.
And the IVUR internal vibrator will also be
on the stand – a machine which has been
redesigned to minimise the occurrence of
so-called leakage current, and offers an eyelet
that can be used to attach a carrying strap.
And Weber said it would also be introducing
a revamped version of its HPR 65 duplex
roller at the show, as well as its MDM engine
protection system for hand-guided soil
compactors.
Lintec will present new developments in the
BAUMA: STOP PRESS
The 3300 multi-application slipform paver
from GOMACO is new at Bauma
field of asphalt and concrete plants, saying
that it continued to put special emphasis on
energy saving, sustainability and operating
cost efficiency.
It said its CSD 1200 asphalt mixing plant –
at 80 tonnes/h was optimised to meet the
special requirements which related to smaller
road construction projects.
The CSD 1200, it said, was a plant type with
a high demand all over the world thanks to
ease of maintenance and an advanced control
system. Like all Lintec plants, this plant type
can be upgraded with hot storage silos or
recycling systems.
The Lintec LEP95 Warm Asphalt System is a
new, patented warm mix asphalt solution with
a production temperature range from 95°C.
At Bauma, the system will be integrated into
the mixer container of the CSD 3000 Plant –
240 tonnes/h.
The system can be switched from hot to
warm asphalt production according to need.
Lintec said the smooth and stable foam led to
an optimum mixing result. ce

maintenance and development of

at Bauma.
The company manufactures no-dig
products for the trenchless installation and
renewal of pipes, and said it would showcase
further developments for installing property
service connections using the Grundomat
displacement hammers – including the new
Grundomat N version, which can be equipped
with a crowned or a stepped head.
The Grundopit K will also be on show, which
can be used for installing, repairing and
renewing property service connections from
a keyhole access with a maximum diameter
of only 650mm.
And the new Grundopit 6V mini bore rig will
also be introduced, boasting improved paddle
function, and precise steering during the
bore process even in difficult soil conditions.
Horizontal Directional Drill rigs will also
be on show, in the form of the company’s
Grundodrill range, while the Grunoram steel
pipe ramming machines will be on display,
together with the company’s Grundocrack
pipe renewal system and Grunoburst pipe
bursting system, among an array of other

Ditch Witch plans to showcase a range of
equipment, including the C- and CX-Series
walk-behind trenchers, and RT45 and RT125
Quad ride-on trenchers, its construction-

is launching the Rototilt R5, a new
model aimed specifically at machines in the
14 to 19 tonnes segment.
Per Väppling, vice president of marketing
and sales, said, “The Rototilt R5 is aimed at
this fast growing machine segment so it’s
important to match the right capabilities and
size with the right value for the customer.”
The new model will have the same
characteristics as the rest of the Rototilt R
range, which the company said would result
in simpler service and a longer service life.
There will be an integrated carrier,
improved central lubrication (ILS) and a new
type of hydraulic connection. The rotor body
consists of an entirely new, improved casting.
Niklas Bjuhr, technical vice president, said,
“We have taken the very best from the Rototilt
R concept and added a number of smart
solutions that both improve the operating
characteristics and provide a better return of

the optional smart ICS control system and
SecureLock, and can be integrated with the
machine’s grade control system through the
Rototilt positioning solution (RPS).
Rototilt said it was also launching another
innovation. It claimed to be the only
tiltrotator manufacturer in the world able
to offer single acting tilt cylinders with load
holding, for the Rototilt R4, R5, R6 and R8.
It said that single acting cylinders reduced
the tiltrotators profile when working, and
provided advantages in narrow or limited
space.
It added that current safety regulations
specified load holding as a requirement
when using pallet forks.
Another tiltrotator manufacturer, Engcon,
said it would be presenting several new
products and explaining more about how a
complete system for the excavator would be
profitable, flexible, safe and versatile.

hitch for the excavator, tiltrotator with
associated quick hitch, tools and accessories,
control systems, etc”.
It said that because of this, it could take
full responsibility for safety, while other
manufacturers bought in different parts
from different suppliers. It claimed that no
other tiltrotator manufacturer could offer
this control.
Engcon said that choosing a tiltrotator
and other accessories largely depended on
the machine that would be equipped. It has
tiltrotators for excavators from 1.5 to 32 tonnes.
It added that its accessories and tools
naturally fit the Engcon tiltrotator regardless
of which model had been chosen.
Engcon is launching its innovative quick
coupler lock system – a system that it said
minimised the risk of activating the wrong
button or function, to release the bucket or
another tool on the excavator.
It said this was an exterior-mounted
and independent control system for the
excavator’s or tiltrotator’s quick hitch, and
replaced the excavator’s built-in coupler
lock system. The system has its own keypad,
with a button to activate the excavator’s
quick hitch and one button to activate the
tiltrotator’s quick hitch.
The panel is always located in the same
place in the cab regardless of make or model.
The quick coupler lock system is also said to
be ready for the future fully-hydraulic quick
hitches of type Oil Quick, Licufix or EC-Oil.
Engcon is also launching a grading beam
(GRB) which it said streamlined grading work
further.
The grading beam will be produced in
four sizes – 1,500, 2,000, 2,500 and 3,000mm
– and is designed for use together with a
tiltrotator “to provide perfect levelling results
efficiently”.
The Engcon grading beam is a steel
structure comprising steel beams which first
level the actual grading surface, while the
rear section houses an adjustable roller that
compacts the levelled surface. Because the
underside of the grading beam is reinforced
with wear bars and the grading beam proper
is fitted with cutters, service life is extended
significantly compared to more rudimentary
designs, said the company.
The gate/attachment is fastened using the
same bolt pattern as many other tools from
Engcon, and the company said that because
it allowed a quick switch from one gate to
another, it provided great freedom of choice.
There will also be 500mm extension kits
for the side beams. This will simplify stock
holding for dealers, said Engcon, as there
would be no need for multiple versions. ce

ubota is using Bauma 2016 to launch
its new Diesel Power Packs in the power
range up to 55kW.
The new Diesel Power Packs have been
specifically designed and developed in
response to the needs of the market, said
Kubota.
Daniel Grant, business development
manager for Kubota Engines UK, said, “We
know that OEMs have been calling out for a
solution like this.
“The Packs feature common rail technology
and state-of-the-art exhaust gas treatment.
This will ensure our OEM customers have the
right engine solution to develop machines
effectively that meet emissions targets.”
He added that the introduction of the Packs
put the company and its customers in a
strong position for when Stage V emissions
legislation came into effect in 2019.
“The 55kW power range is a key area and
will act as the building block for Kubota to
develop other power packs in the future,” said
Grant.
JCB Power Products said it was preparing
to target the rental market by offering a full
range of generators to suit any application.
The company’s QS Generator range covers
power outputs of 20 to 220kVA, while JCB’s
Inteli-Hybrid Generators and B40 Battery Box
provide an alternative power solution for
customers looking to save fuel and costs,
said JCB.
The company is now preparing to launch
a range of RS-branded generator sets,
specifically designed for rental customers. The
RS range will sit alongside the existing QS
line of generators, which can also be tailored

25kVA generator model.
It will also be showcasing examples from its
EPSR rental generator range – which boasts
power outputs from 10kVA to 250kVA.
All rental generators in the range are
equipped with a 1,500rpm engine apart
from the EPSR11-3TDE (10kVA), which is
manufactured with a 3,000rpm Kubota engine.
Europower said all its rental generators
were compact, quiet and equipped with a
peripheral bumper and a galvanised frame.
It added that remote monitoring was also
possible – via internet or 3G on PC, smart
phone or tablet.
Paclite said it would showcase its Pack-Light
PL400 tower light, aimed at the rental market
among other sectors. The 4 x 1000W metal
halide model provides 350,000 lumens and
is equipped with forklift pockets and lifting
hooks for easy transport loading. Paclite said
the machine was also quiet, producing 63dPA
at 7m.
Morris Site Machinery will also showcase
new lighting towers, including the 400-hour
run time SMC TL-90 LED, and the newest
model in the range – the extra low voltage
SMC TL-90 DC-ELV.
Said to be compact and easy to transport,
the SMC TL-90 DC-ELV features four 300W
LED lamp heads offering directional light.
Morris said the new model offered up to 165
hours of uninterrupted operation, and also
had safety features including automatic mast
descent when the handbrake is deployed,
fully bunded fuel tanks, central lifting eye,
secure fixed points from ground level, and
emergency stop.
Atlas Copco’s Portable Energy division will
officially launch the seven-model HiLight
range at the show. The company said visitors to
its stand could expect to see a number of new
innovations, such as the latest in LED lighting,
as well as understanding how incorporating
the latest technology has enhanced energy
efficiency, portability and safety.
The company said it also planned to launch
its new 8 Series compressor, which it described
the most exciting addition to Atlas Copco’s

innovations in wear parts for the
protection of buckets, including
the renewed StarMet rope shovels product
range for electrical rope shovels, as well
as new designs for teeth, adapters and
locking systems for mining and construction
machinery, featuring the new range of ProMet
side and blade shrouds.
The ProMet system for construction
machinery includes the new range of ProMet
wing and blade shrouds, as well as the
weldable and bolt-on shrouds of the MTG
Plus range.
MTG said they had all been specifically
designed to ensure increased wear life and
improved bucket performance for 30 to 85
tonne class excavators and loader buckets.
It said the main advantages of this system
included offering a wide range of reversible
wing shrouds that allowed for a change of
position to achieve the complete wear of the
part, increasing its wear life.
It also avoids exposure by the bucket
sides  to impacts and abrasions, which is
another feature MTG said increased wear
life.
There is a complete range  for wing
widths of between 30 and 60mm,
and the MTGtwist  hammerless
system is used.

amtec’s updated Robi MM Multimaster
screening bucket series will be on
show at Bauma, and it is a series that
is made up of five models that have been
designed for screening, separating, mixing
and composting.
The company said the machine could
be equipped with standard, soil, peat or
compost axles.
As a carrier, the customer can choose a 10
to 45 tonne excavator or a wheeled loader of
6 to 19 tonnes.
The updated range is said to feature a
number of improvements.
The frame has been redesigned, and there
are cleaning combs to keep the axles clean,

Kobelco Construction Machinery

Aiyon Corporation has released two new
pulverisers for this year’s Bauma.
The two models being introduced are the
OSC280AV fixed pulveriser and ORC280AV
HR rotation pulveriser. The company said
they were suitable for excavators from 22 to
38 tonnes. Okada Aiyon will add more bolt-
on tooth models to other classes after the
exhibition.
The manufacturer adopted the tooth-
plate system for the bolt-on tooth to ensure
durability. Special cast steel teeth are firmly
welded to base plate, with each tooth
tightened by single screw. The tooth-plate
can be replaced at the job site to reduce
downtime and increase productivity.
The OSC series is the best selling range
of pulveriser for Okada Aiyon, which has
become a partner for demolition contractors
in Asia.
The series was introduced in 1986 and

articulating hydraulic boom and

like the rest of the MC range, the MK1033C
has a hydraulic six-section luffing boom and
jib.
The MK1033C is still narrow enough to fit
through a standard doorway and weighs less
than 2 tonnes. It has a capacity just below 1
tonne, a maximum working height of nearly
11.5m and maximum working radius of
almost 10m. Each outrigger can be placed in

number of new products are promised
from Isoli, with one of them, the 19m
hydraulic PT 190 J, said to be designed
to meet the requirement for simple, cheap
telescopic machines with jib.
The PT 190 J is mounted on a 3.5 tonne
chassis.
Another new model, the 20m working
height PT 200 J is a fully-electronic machine.

Leguan Lifts will unveil the Leguan 165,
which is based on the 160, boasting direct
hydraulic controls, maximum 8m outreach,
and a maximum working height of 16.4m,
carrying 230kg.

Scanclimber will show its existing Taurus

Travelling to the show
For visitors flying in, Munich Airport is
the nearest. During Bauma a shuttle
bus service will run from the airport to
Messe München, the show site, every
30 minutes. The journey takes 45
minutes and tickets are €8 one-way or
€13.50 for a return journey.
The airport shuttle bus stops are
located directly in front of the areas A
and Z at Terminal 1, and in front of Terminal 2. From 08:00 to 18:00
shuttle buses travelling to the exhibition grounds depart from the
airport every 30 minutes. From 9:30 to 19:00 the shuttle busses run
every 30 minutes from the exhibition grounds to the airport. These
times are provisional, however, so it is advised that visitors refer to
the specific information about shuttle bus service during the show.
Taxis from the airport to the Trade Fair Centre cost an agreed fixed
rate of €59.
For journeys into Munich city centre from the airport, take the
S1 or S8 urban rail lines to the Hauptbahnhof (central station) or
Ostbahnhof (eastern station), or stations and connections along the
route.
Several bus services are also available, serving different parts of the
city – check information counters at the airport, depending on your
destination. A limited number of hotels offer a shuttle bus service.
Taxis are also available, but as the airport is some 30km from the
city centre, fares to the city centre are likely to be €65 or more.
Rental cars are available at Munich airport from Avis, Europcar,
Hertz, National/Alamo and Sixt. Service counters and pick-up/drop-
off points are located in Terminal 1.
Munich is also well served by rail and road networks.

MUNICH METRO
The New Munich Trade Fair Centre is served by the U2 underground
metro line, part of Munich’s extensive public transport network.
The Messestadt West station is at the main entrance to the trade
fair, and is convenient for the lower numbered exhibitions halls (A1
to A3, B0 to B3 etc.).
The Messestadt Ost station is more useful for the outside exhibition
areas and the higher numbered halls (A4 to A6 etc.).
There is also car parking available at the trade fair centre and a
steady flow of taxis. The huge numbers of visitors to Bauma can lead
to heavy traffic and delays, particularly at peak times.

Bauma’s popularity means hotel rooms are hard to come by in
Munich during the show, and visitors can expect to pay five to ten

for new machines,
and Sandy Guthrie
investigates some of
the new telehandlers
that are hitting the
market
T
he shadow of the biggest construction
industry show, Bauma, is hanging
over the industry at the moment,
as it presents a massive opportunity for
manufacturers to launch new machines.
With many of the new models already
announced, there will undoubtedly be a host
of extra surprise launches at the Munich fair
– in all categories of construction machinary.
In the telescopic handler sector, there are
several introductions. Caterpillar, for example,
is launching a new telehandler model at
Bauma.
The new Cat TH3510D telehandler, with a
rated load capacity of 3,500kg and maximum
lift height of 9,800mm, is said to feature a
compact design for optimum job site
manoeuvrability and a three-section hydraulic
boom with a low pivot pin mounting for
maximum all-round visibility.
Cat said the new model combined “field-
proven Cat drive line components with a
simple, highly efficient gear-pump hydraulic
system to deliver long-term durability and
reliable performance at low operating costs”.
The TH3510D uses a new Cat C3.4B diesel
engine rated at 75kW which meets Stage

A Cat four-speed power-shift transmission
drives both of the TH3510D axles for
permanent four-wheel drive. A limited-slip
differential in the front axle further is said to
help traction in wet conditions.
Oil-immersed dual axle disc brakes are used,
and a parking brake works in conjunction with
the front brakes.
The braking system is designed to provide

operating conditions.
Cat claimed the TH3510D operator’s station
was designed for simplicity and durability,
with all hydraulic functions controlled by
a single lever joystick with F-N-R, allowing
simultaneous drive and boom functions.
Switches are clustered by function, and a
new instrument panel and dash are said to
allow at-a-glance monitoring of machine
performance. An optional advanced display
monitor provides load charts as well as the feed
from the rear view camera when activated. It
can also be used to set operator preferences
and perform diagnostic checks.
The TH3510D is fitted with a standard Cat
Integrated Tool carrier (IT) quick coupler that
is compatible with the entire Cat telehandler
range. An optional hydraulically operated
coupler is available.
Additional options for the TH3510D include
reversing sensors, a load weighing system, and
a Load Management Indicator System (LMIS)
for regions requiring it.
Easy serviceability helps reduce the TH3510D
overall cost of ownership, according to Cat,
with all routine service points accessible from
ground level, and daily maintenance limited
to fluid-level checks and a walk-around
inspection.
MAJOR STEP FORWARD
Bobcat has launched its new EVO generation
of Stage IIIB rotary telescopic handlers,
which it said provided a major step forward
in the design of rotary telehandler products
worldwide.
The new EVO range from Bobcat comprises
four models – the TR38160, TR50190, TR50210
and TR40250 – providing maximum lifting

Kubota V-3800 DI T 3.8 litre four-cylinder Stage
IIIB-compliant diesel engine providing 74.5kW
of power at a rated speed of 2,600rpm. The new
telehandler offers a maximum lifting capacity
of 3.8 tonnes and a maximum horizontal reach
of 13.4m.
The TR50190, TR50210 and TR40250 models
are powered by the FPT-NEF Series 4.5L Stage
IIIB diesel engine with an output of 105kW.
The TR50190 and TR50210 models both have
a lift capacity of 5.0 tonnes, while the TR40250
telehandler has a lift capacity of 4.0 tonnes.
The maximum horizontal reach in the three
models is 16.4, 18.0 and 20.5m.

serve the needs of an entire site from just one
position, said Bobcat.
An auto wheel alignment feature, which is
optional on the TR38160 model and standard
on the other three models, allows the operator
to change the steering modes, and Bobcat
said the three auto-alignment steering modes
provided excellent manoeuvrability, even in
tight and difficult working environments.
The stabilisers have both individual and all-
at-once activation to help ensure machine
stability in all types of terrain. Full operation
control for the stabilisers and position
indicators are provided on the control panel.
Bobcat has launched a new standard three-
year warranty for the complete range of its rigid
telehandlers manufactured at the company’s
plant at Pontchâteau in Loire Atlantique in
France.

developed a radio-controlled system that is

ssaid to allow the total control of the vehicle
without the driver on board.

The system consists of a portable control
cconsole, with a range of over 30m and
ffeaturing joystick and selection switches, that
iincludes all control functions of the machine
– steering wheel, steering mode, direction of
ttravel, speed, boom and equipment control,
aand also frame leveling and tilting system.
Dieci said a wide format display in a central
position on the console allowed the operator
p
aalways to have all the operating parameters of
tthe vehicle under control. These include fluid
aand fuel levels, battery charge, data relating to
sspeed and engine rpm, boom extension and
position and its load control.

Even without an operator on board, safety
was still important, said Dieci. With a centered

jjoystick, the system automatically engages the
parking brakes, avoiding unwanted start-ups

d tthat it said could cause accidental collisions.
An emergency stop button that instantly
stops all machine functions is in full view and
accessible, it said.
The radio remote control can be installed on
all Hercules 190 and 210 models.
The Hercules 190.10 is part of the company’s
heavy duty vehicles range. The maximum
lifting height is 10.20m, and the maximum
capacity is 19,000kg. It is equipped with a FTP
Stage 3B engine capable of developing 129kw
of power.
The hydrostatic transmission is equipped
with a third central differential, which it is
possible to lock, if necessary.
The lifting equipment includes a proportional
distributor with electronic control load-
sensing-flow sharing, with 170 litres/m and
350 bar pressure variable displacement pump.
It has a boom raising regenerative system,
which increases the empty boom lifting speed.
The machine’s inching pedal, said to be a
Dieci exclusive, allows the machine run at slow
speed with engine at full throttle.
Dieci is launching its Pegasus 45.30 at Bauma.
The 30m working height machine incorporates
new characteristics which are said to increase
its performance, starting with the four-cylinder
127kW FPT Stage IV engine with aftercooler. Its
hydraulic and fuel tanks have been increased
in size, allowing greater periods between

Dieci has also been extending its production
through a new partnership with Haulotte
which it announced last year. It started with a
prototype of the first in the High Lift range, the
HTL 5210. It has a lift capacity of 5.2 tonnes up
to 10m and a maximum forward reach of 3.5
tonnes at 5.8m with the use of the stabilisers.
Two further models will be announced at
Bauma, both of which will be produced
by Dieci and sold by Haulotte with
its branding. The HTL6508 and
HTL7210 complete the
High Lift range, and have
lift capacities without
stabilisers of 6.5 tonnes up
to 7.7m, and 7.2 tonnes up to 9.5m.
Designed for handling bulky and heavy
loads, the HTL6508 and HTL7210 are adapted
in particular for extraction industries, like
mining, and civil engineering works, as well
as for pick and carry operations. They include
pothole guards with a cut off system and a
limited slip differential on the front axle and
the cab, as well as an inching pedal for smooth
and precise forward movements.
FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS
Bauma will see Magni launch the 38.7m
working height Magni RTH 5.39S.
The company said it followed in the footsteps
of a smaller model, the 35m RTH 5.35S,
which was launched last year.

And, this year, Volvo CE will launch its new
H-Series range, which will include its biggest
ever production articulated hauler – the
55-tonne capacity A60H. As it is a Bauma year,
there could be details of the new machines
at the show
The H Series is the culmination of 50 years
of Volvo engineering and creation. The A60H
boasts a higher payload – a 40% increase on
Volvo’s previous largest hauler in the shape of
the A40 – which significantly lowers the cost-
per-tonne ratio for hauler customers.
The new size also offers an alternative to
rigid dump trucks and construction trucks
operating on soft, uneven or steep roads,
allowing a similar amount of material to be
hauled in a shorter cycle time.
Good stability, comfort and high hauling
speeds are ensured by the H-Series, said Volvo
CE, thanks to matched drivetrain, automatic
drive combinations, all-terrain bogie, hydro-
mechanical steering, and active suspension.
Looking back at the 50 years of Volvo CE’s
articulated hauler, 1966 was the birth of its
first creation – the DR631.
Nicknamed Gravel Charlie, it may have only
had a 9 tonne payload, but it set the stage for
greater things to come.
Only a year after its launch, in 1967, the
company introduced the DR860, which
claimed to be the first articulated hauler with
a bogie, meaning that the material in the >

load body remains level and stable, while the

wheels cope with very uneven road surfaces.
The first hauler with a turbo-charged engine
– the DR860T – arrived in 1970, and in 1979,
things started to speed up, with the launch
of the 5350. Capable of 50km/h, the Off-
road Express was able to maintain new high
speeds, thanks to a suspended front axle
and an automatic transmission. Traction was
further increased with the addition of a six-
wheel-drive system.
The company has since gone on to produce
the A20, A35, A40, C-series, D-class, and many
more.
NEW VERSIONS
Doosan Construction Equipment has
launched new versions of the company’s
DA30 and DA40 articulated dump trucks
(ADTs) meeting Stage IV/Tier 4 Final engine
emission regulations.
The DA30 and DA40 models feature
an articulation hinge positioned behind
the turning ring to provide equal weight
distribution to the front axle, even during
maximum steer articulation.
A free-swinging rear tandem bogie ensures
equal distribution of weight to each wheel
and guarantees permanent six-wheel contact
and drive for equal power distribution on
difficult terrain, said Doosan.
The low fuel consumption is achieved by
Scania selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and
exhaust gas recirculation (ECR) diesel engines
and a new ZF EP transmission, improving
the transfer of power from the engine to the
wheels for outstanding traction.
The specially-shaped body and sloping
frame on the DA30 claims to offer a low centre
of gravity, while its combination with the
free-swinging tandem, ensures low ground
bearing pressure.

Plant Hire (TPH).
Two of Doosan’s DA30 ADTs have been hired
with drivers from TPH, which is based at
Trafford Park in Manchester, for work on the
project to build the new Mersey Gateway
Bridge across the River Mersey near Liverpool,
also in the UK.
Thomas Halligan, owner of TPH, said, “Since
we started purchasing Doosan ADTs in 2014,
we have seen very good utilisation, especially
for the trucks with high flotation tyres on
projects across north-west England.”

power distribution on difficult terrain
The two new Doosan ADTs have joined
eight more DA30 models that already form
part of the hire fleet at TPH, all of which
were purchased from Norwest Plant, based at
Wigan in Lancashire, the authorised Doosan
and Bobcat dealer for North West England
and North Wales.
Work started on the Mersey Gateway Project
on 7 May, 2014, to build a new six-lane toll
bridge over the Mersey between Runcorn and
Widnes.
When it opens in autumn 2017, it will help
to relieve the congested Silver Jubilee Bridge
further up the river.
Caterpillar has launched its new C2 Series
ADT range, including the 234kW 725C2 and
the 274kW 730C2 and 730C2 EJ with ejector-
type body.
The 725C2 has a rated payload of 24 tonnes,
while the two larger models have a rated
payload of 28 tonnes.

The worldwide market for purpose-built off-road haulers is in the region of 8,000 trucks per
year at present (1,268 in Europe), according to specialist market research and forecasting
company Off-Highway Research.
The rigid hauler sector is having a tough time, with the fall in global commodity prices
depressing sales of these machines to the mining sector. As a result, global production of
rigid haulers halved between 2011 and 2014 to 2,631 units, and is likely to remain depressed
throughout this year.
The ADT sector is more buoyant, with global production levels steady above 5,000 units for
the last five years, and key end markets showing growth. Whereas rigid dump trucks have a
fairly ubiquitous popularity in the mining and quarrying sector, the market for articulated
trucks is more selective in terms of regions, and more focused on construction.
The European market for ADTs accounted for 1,268 units, which was one of the major
markets worldwide. Demand in the sector has essentially been flat over the last five years in
this region – reflecting low growth in the end markets of construction and quarrying. By far
the biggest market in the world is North America, where the ADT sector has benefited from a
booming construction market. Sales last year were estimated at 3,500 units – more than 60%
of global production.
Although the main global market is North America, the bulk of the world’s ADT production
is in Europe, where the concept and design was arguably born. The biggest players in the
sector are Volvo, which manufactures in Sweden under its own brand and in the UK under
the Terex Trucks brand, and Caterpillar, which concentrates ADT production in the UK. Besides
these two dominant forces, the likes of Doosan and Liebherr also build ADTs in Europe, as
does Bell, which has a plant in Germany besides its mother factory in South Africa.

Terex Trucks claims the ADT’s high-
performance oil extends service intervals to
6,000 hours and says the truck’s drivetrain,
with longitudinal and limited slip transverse
differential locks, is able to maintain traction,
even on the most difficult ground.
Operator comfort has been said to have
been improved again, now Terex Trucks has
included anti-vibration mounts for both
engine and cab, as well as cushioned stops on
the steering cylinders.
Machine performance information is also
said to have been improved, with diagnostics
including oil quality, oil levels, filter life and
various fault codes.
The TA400 Gen 10 will be launched at this
year’s Bauma. It will be available globally as
Tier 4 Final in Europe and North America,
and in a Tier 2 format for lesser-regulated
countries.
The company promises further models in its
articulated hauler range later this year, while
more models are expected to be launched
in 2017.
RELIABILITY
Elsewhere, Hitachi is claiming unfailing
strength and reliability in its range of rigid
haulers.
It is offering the EH1100-5 65-tonne class
hauler to compete against the big ADTs on
construction sites and quarries.
The hauler boasts either a Tier 2 Cummins
567kW engine or an MTU series 2000 engine,
as well as an Allison H6620A automatic
transmission.
The EH1100-5 has an active traction control
system which Hitachi said had been refined
to control wheel spin in wet and muddy
conditions.

Also, all EH1100-5 trucks are equipped with
a DLU (data logging unit). This allows remote
monitoring of the truck via satellite, wi-fi and
Wenco.
Another interesting software feature that
Hitachi offers is a speed limit feature that
automatically restricts the truck top speed to
a customer determined limit. This feature will
automatically apply the retarder to control the
set speed limit if the limit is exceeded while
travelling downhill.
The EH1100-5 boasts new rear wet disc
brake which now include an integral Wet Disc
parking brake, said Hitachi.
The steering filter is now located outside the
frame, which allows servicing to take place at
ground level.
The two high-capacity batteries have also
been moved to the front bumper for ground
level access.

In terms of usability, the cab’s dashboard has
been replaced by a 25cm screen, which can
also be used to troubleshoot and diagnose
machine issues.
Offsetting the LCD display slightly right
of the steering column is said to allow the
lowering of the dashboard in front of the
operator for better visibility to the front of
the truck.
‘IMPROVEMENT ON RIGID’
Bell Equipment first introduced its own 60
tonne class ADT, the B60D, in 2013, which it
claimed was in many ways an improvement
on rigid haulers of the same capacity, given
its ability to perform well on variable haul
road surfaces.
At its launch, it said it signalled a blurring
of the lines between rigid and articulated
machines, with Bell claiming it was confident
that the B60D would win the argument, as
a result of its manoeuvrability on difficult
terrain.
Hauling on roads, therefore, require less
maintenance, significantly lowering costs.
The B60D has two driven axles, giving it a
4x4 capacity. Its rigid truck frame style, adds
to its strength, both literally and as a USP
(unique selling proposition).
While the biggest articulated machines do
battle with rigids, the lower-capacity ADTs
are largely having things their own way, with
sales of rigid haulers in construction seen to
be falling away somewhat over the past three
years.
Scottish firm McFadyens Contractors has
been using the Bell B30D ADT for five years
and, after signing a contract to work on a
forestry roads project, the company has opted
to buy a second used B30D, as well as a new
B30E.
The company’s managing director, Billy
McFadyen, said, “Our existing Bell dump truck
has proved its reliability, while operators have
confirmed that they like the comfort and

Many would say “crafty” nicely sums up
DeFeo’s knack of navigating the vagaries of
the construction industry over the past two
decades. Would he be passing on his craft to

do is think they have all the advice and want
to impart it. What I learned a long time ago is,

be able to quickly tighten and

The Binders claim to offer
significant operator time savings
over standard ratchet binders
and to be particularly useful in
confined spaces where a full
rotation is not possible with a
manual binder.

TwinDrive is said to save time
Numa aims to improve
drilling performance
Numa, designer and manufacturer of down hole hammers and
bits, has released a Vortex Backhead design that is said to improve
drilling performance and hammer/bit life.
It is available for Numa’s 12in (30.5cm) hammer line when
drilling conditions require a significant amount of water injection.
The company said that typically, when water was injected into
the air supply of a conventional backhead, the water would travel
through all hammer components and exhaust out the bottom of
the bit to improve hole cleaning.
It said water was not a concern when small volumes were
used, but a drop-off of drilling performance could occur when
significant amounts of water were required.
Drawbacks can include slower drilling due to wet bottom
conditions and a reduction in hammer/bit life because of
cavitation from water.
The Numa Vortex Backhead claims to avoid a drop-off of drilling
performance by ejecting water out the top of the backhead before
it can go through internal hammer components.
The design allows for drillers to realise the benefits of water
injection without the wear and loss of hammer performance.
Numa engineers are said to have accomplished this by creating
a spinning process (vortex) in the backhead that leverages the
density difference between water and air.
Fluids entering the top end of the hammer are spun, pushing
heavy material (water) to the outside to be ejected out the top of
the backhead. Lighter material (air) stays to the inside and travels
down the feed tube to power the hammer and clean the bottom
of the hole.
The amount of water ejected by the Vortex Backhead can be
controlled by the two jets, or chokes, found at the top of the
backhead.
