ElecEng 2FH3 ELECTROMAGNETICS I (Electrostatics and Magnetostatics)

Electromagnetics Part I is an introduction into engineering electromagnetics. It covers the mathematical foundations
such as selected topics of vector calculus as well as their application in electrostatics, magnetostatics and conduction.
Introduction to the time-varying field is made through Faraday’s law. Electromagnetic analysis is practiced through
assignments based on MATLAB. Hands-on experience is encouraged through Bonus Projects.
Course Objective: To obtain working level knowledge of electrostatics and magnetism; prepare for courses in waves
and fields, electrical motors and generators, radio-frequency and microwave engineering, and antenna engineering.

1. Mathematical basics: vector algebra, vector calculus, coordinate systems and transformations
2. Electrostatics in vacuum
3. Dielectrics and capacitance
4. Current, conductors and resistance
5. The steady magnetic field in nonmagnetic media
6. Magnetic force, torque and energy
7. Inductance
8. Faraday’s law

ECE753 Modern Antennas in Wireless Telecommunications

Objectives and Outline: The course provides the fundamentals in the theory and practice of antenna design and the
antenna deployment in the modern wireless telecommunication systems. The theory of electromagnetic radiation is
introduced and the fundamental antenna parameters are explained. Basic antenna measurement techniques are
introduced and practiced in an 8-hour laboratory session. Classical radiating elements are studied: dipoles/monopoles,
loops, apertures, horns, reflectors, microstrip and slot elements, etc. Matching techniques are presented. The principles
of analysis and design of antenna arrays are discussed. Special attention is paid to antennas popular in mobile (cellular,
satellite) telecommunications. The fundamental limitations of electrically small antennas as well as the principles of
smart antennas are briefly introduced through seminar sessions.
