Aerodynamics Tutorial 1 January 25, 2019

1. Derive the differential form of the mass conservation equation from the integral form.

2. A university laboratory that generates 20 m3 /s of air flow at design condition wishes

to build a wind tunnel with variable speeds. It is proposed to build the tunnel with a se-
quence of three circular test sections: section-1 will have a diameter of 2.2 m, section-2 a
diameter of 1.6 m, and section-3 a diameter such that the average speed is 65 m/s.
(a) What will be the speeds in sections 1 and 2?
(b) What must the diameter of section 3 be to attain the desired speed at design condition?

3. Show that 5 · (ρ~v ) = 5ρ · ~v + ρ 5 · ~v . Evaluate 5 · (ρ~v ) in cylindrical coordinates.

4. The x component of velocity in a steady incompressible flow field in the x-y plane is given
by u = 10ex/5 cos(y/5). Find the simplest y component of velocity for this flow field.

5. A 1D unsteady flow is given by the velocity field,

2 x
u= ( − ao )
1+γ t
and the density field is given by,
ρ (γ − 1)x 2 γ−1 2
=( + )
ρo (γ + 1)tao γ + 1
(a) Calculate the substantial change of density.
(b) Check the validity of the continuity equation:
Dρ ∂ρ
+u =0
Dt ∂x
6. A viscous liquid is sheared between 2 parallel concentric circular disks. The upper disk
is rotating at an angular velocity ω while the lower disk is fixed rigidly. The origin of this
configuration is at the center if the lower disk with the upper disk at z = h. The velocity
field between the disks is given by: V~ = rωz/h eˆθ .
(a) Qualitatively describe the nature of this velocity profile.
(b) What are the boundary conditions that this velocity profile must obey? Prove that they
do.

7. Harry is observing an unsteady incompressible flow field in a fish tank. He uses his
wand to magically create more of that fluid out of nowhere within the flow field. In this
magical world, will the continuity equation be valid? Why/Why not?
