Conditionals

Conditionals are used to speculate about what could happen, what


might have happened, and what we wish would happen.
Zero conditional sentence – stating factual things, general knowledge
If the weather changes suddenly, I get a headache.
If I heat water to 100°C, it starts to boil.

First conditional sentence – stating certanity, prediction for the future


If it snows tomorrow, I will not go to work.
If my daughter decides not to go to school, I will have to force her.
If I do not have time, we will not meet.
If my son does not go to a skiing course, he will not be a good skier.
What will you do if it is rainy tomorrow?
Second conditional sentence – stating unreal conditions in the present
If I went there, I would be happy.
to be – was/were – WERE
If I were a boy, I would drink beer with guys.
If my son were smarter, I would be glad.
If the hurrican hit the town, it might destroy everything.
If my mother joined a travel club, she might not feel so lonely.
What would you do if you were stranded on a desert island?
If I were you, I would memorize this rule about unreal conditions.
Third conditional sentence – stating unreal conditions that did not
happen in the past. It is used to express a regret about the situation!

If I had been able to study again, I would have studied biochemistry.


If I had been born 100 years ago, I would have worn different clothes.
If we had saved more money, we could have taken a better vacation.
If it had not rained so much, it would have been a perfect day.
If they had not read that book, the ending of the movie would have
been a surprise for them.
